Laboratory Technician
One to two openings for casual summer Laboratory Technicians in the laboratory of Dr. Malia Edwards at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Edwards and her team study the role of retinal glia and choroidal mast cells in retinal development and disease. The labs primary focus is age-related macular degeneration. The lab utilizes a combination of human donor eyes, animal models and cell culture experiments.




Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Laboratory Assistant will be assisting with real time PCR, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs and Western blots.
  • They will also be assisting with data analysis as well as solution preparation in the laboratory.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science course work. Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred.
  • Experience in basic laboratory procedures required. Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred


Preferred Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in the sciences and have some lab experience from undergraduate courses.
  • They will have the ability to follow precise instructions and work well with the members of the laboratory team.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
