The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics seek a Lab Specialist to work in the Kasson laboratory assisting with research on infectious disease and viral entry. The recent emergence of COVID-19 has highlighted the need to develop better vaccines against emerging viruses and to assess the efficacy and mechanisms of such vaccines. The incumbent will join a team developing better ways to assess antiviral antibodies and fight emerging diseases.

The qualified candidate will have experience in molecular biology and mammalian cell culture. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience in viral culture, standard virology techniques, and creation of pseudotyped virus.

Position Responsibilities include:

  • Helping Principal Investigators (PIs) coordinate research projects, performing experimental procedures, collecting information and data, and preparing tissues and specimens for procedures.
  • Participate in formulating research methods, suggesting options for improving quality, and recommending solutions. Participate in computer database design, utilization, and research/data analyses, and suggest future improvements to data measurement.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of projects. Schedule and maintain records of equipment/facilities. May assemble, test, calibrate, clean, or make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Work independently on collection of data and analyze research results.
  • Confer with PIs in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field

Experience: Molecular biology and mammalian cell culture techniques. Must be reliable, dependable and have both excellent verbal and written communication skills.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
