General Summary:

The Emergency Department (ED) Technician I (ET) assists medical and nursing staff in providing technical support for patient care. The ED Technician's responsibilities include collecting, communicating and documenting data and information; performing diagnostic testing, surveillance and monitoring; assisting with and performing treatments and procedures; maintaining medical equipment and supplies; assisting with transportation of patients, supplies, specimens and medications; responding to emergencies including initiation of emergency measures; and performing associated and delegated duties in support of departmental and hospital operations. The ED Technician works under the delegated authority of a registered nurse to perform nursing functions within their scope of practice and works under the direction and supervision of nursing and medical staff. The ED Technician assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered as all-inclusive.

Minimum licensure/certification required (if applicable):

Certification as a nursing assistant by the Maryland Board of Nursing

High school diploma

BLS certification

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:

Minimum one-year experience as certified nursing assistant (corpsman, or EMT/paramedic training may be alternatively considered). Basic IV Therapy including venipuncture and insertion proficiency preferred. CPI (or equivalent) training preferred Current knowledge of nursing skills within their scope of practice. Computer and audiovisual skills using various applications and technologies: Internet, email, word processing, wireless phone, pager. Ability to work in a high-stress environment. Effectively read, speak, write, compose and comprehend English. Effective eye and hand coordination. Effective problem-solving skills. Ability to multi-task, organize and prioritize. Ability to work well and effectively communicate with individuals and teams.

Working Conditions:

General: Must be able to independently perform essential job functions.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to independently: (a) lift patients/patient care equipment up to 35 pounds, (b) push, pull, and move patients and patient care equipment, (c) bend body downward at the waist and be able to kneel, (d) utilize a computer for periods of time throughout the shift, (e) perform fine motor skills both upper extremities.

Visual Acuity: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly at distances close to the eyes.

Auditory Acuity: Must be able to identify and distinguish auditory alarms in noisy environments.

Environmental Conditions: The worker is subject to hazards associated with a hospital environment.
