Geospatial Technician

The Municipal team supports many facets of GBA's Architect and Engineering business. The team includes Asset Management, Knowledge Management & GIS, and Advisory Services groups. All groups develop positive partnerships and collaborate closely with other GBA markets, state agencies, municipalities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to solve the complex challenges facing local government.

This position will report to the Knowledge Management Manager and will work with project managers, engineers, technicians, and clients to provide assistance technical support, and solutions for the geospatial problems of the day. This entry-level position will perform geospatial data creation and manipulation tasks, routine data maintenance, and quality control checks. Staff at this level will also create standard geospatial products including web apps and web maps, field apps and field maps, file and enterprise geodatabases, graphics, tables, reports, hubs, and story maps; and research and respond to internal and external customer requests for information.

Responsibilities:

  • Come to work each day with a passion for helping municipalities and NGOs solve the myriad issues they face in this environment.
  • Develop a broad understanding of the use cases and best practices for GIS in the municipal and NGO spheres.
  • Collaborate with GBA staff, municipalities, and NGOs to develop asset management solutions that empower and inform staff and improve the lives of their stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with GIS, CAD, and Revit subject matter experts across GBA to assist in the development of digital twin, BIM and asset management workflows and standard operating procedures.
  • Become an active member of state, regional, and local Geospatial groups, and organizations.
  • Enter, edit, and update geospatial data in file geodatabase or relational database feature classes following standard procedures and guidelines.
  • Georeference raster imagery for use in facility mapping, asset management projects, and other internal and external projects.
  • Generate custom maps of routine to moderate complexity to meet specific internal and external client requirements.
  • Perform quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and completeness of data and adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the development of scripts for gap analysis and data clean-up or to automate repetitive actions and processes.
  • Provide GIS support to project staff and client technical staff.
  • Operate non-GIS-specific hardware including tablets, cameras, and GPS/GNSS devices.
  • This position may also require occasional field work related to data gathering or to gain a more complete understanding of the importance of accurate and complete data collection.

Requirements:
  • Must be a self-starter with a passion for problem-solving and an insatiable thirst for knowledge.
  • Comfortable challenging the status quo, seeking out innovative technologies and methods, and deploying solutions in highly variable environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise. Experience using Utility Network is a plus.
  • Minimum two-year Associate/Technical Degree in a related field, or a GIS Certificate.
  • Proficient in Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with QGIS, Postgres SQL, MapBox, GDAL, OpenStreetMap, and other open-source solutions is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with Arcade, Python, SQL, HTML, Java, JavaScript, or C++ preferred.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
  • Frequency of travel: Occasional travel is required for meetings, training, conferences, and site visits; location may vary and may require overnight stays.
  • Light physical activities and effort required - working in an office environment.
  • Fieldwork tasks could include walking and climbing on uneven surfaces, exposure to outdoor environments and extreme weather (heat and freezing temperatures), noise exposure, driving for extended periods of time, exposure to allergens (e.g., pollen, dust, cedar, sumac, poison ivy), exposure to construction and traffic work zones, possible hand and power tool use, and extended periods of Personal Protective Equipment use.
