Position Information: DescriptionThe laboratory manager works in consultation with the department chair and faculty to manage undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Physics & Astrophysics Department which serves approximately 1,200 – 1,300 students each academic year. The individual occupying this position will teach two laboratory sections each semester and must be available to fill in for a teaching assistant in the event of illness or other emergency. Department Information

The primary functions of the Physics and Astrophysics Department are teaching, research and service. In accordance with the mission of the University, the Department provides physics courses for physics majors and minors, astrophysics minor, and service courses to students from other programs in the colleges of Arts & Sciences and other units of the University.

Duties & Responsibilities
    Manage teaching laboratories of the Physics & Astrophysics Department
      Coordinate lab schedule with available course instructorsMaintain a clean, organized and safe laboratory environment Set-up equipment prior to scheduled laboratory sections. This may involve lifting and moving some laboratory equipment which may weigh up to 50 lb. Properly track and store lab equipment Order consumables Develop and revise laboratory experiments as needed in cooperation with faculty
    Manage graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) Train and manage graduate teaching assistants including supervision and monitoring of performance as directed by the department chair Conduct weekly TA meetings
Teach two introductory-level physics laboratories each semester (Fall, Spring) and perform all duties tied to instruction including grading, establishing office hours, providing student feedback on performance and reporting lab scores to instructors Contribute to updating and improvement of laboratory manuals as course changes occur Assist faculty, staff, and students with special projects and department promotional activities Required Competencies
    Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to operate equipment normally found in physics teaching laboratories Ability and willingness to learn new technologies Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills along with ability to take initiative Ability to work in a detail-oriented atmosphere Ability to effectively and positively interact with all constituents (teaching assistants, faculty, students, staff and public) Excellent problem-solving skills
Minimum Requirements
    M.S. degree in physics Six months experience working in an experimental research laboratory environment at least as a graduate student. At least two years of experience in teaching introductory physics laboratories Successful completion of criminal history records check

    Ph.D. degree in physics Two or more years of experimental research laboratory experience at least as a graduate student.
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification $45,000/year, Full-time, Benefitted, Exempt. Work ScheduleMonday – Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Requires occasional work outside of standard hours if required by course schedule and/or the need to cover a lab class for a TA. Start DateJune 1, 2021. Position is contingent upon availability of funding.
