Job Summary/Basic Function:
Provides support to current CAMP students as the instructor for two CAMP classes (one fall and one spring semester) and coordinating the career counseling services for current and former CAMP students. This position also provides follow-up support to CAMP students after they complete their first year of college through graduation.

Level Scope:
Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self-development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:
The Follow Up Counselor must:

  • Plan, design, and teach the fall semester University Success and spring semester Career Development courses for CAMP students. Coordinate the academic study sessions and CAMP lab services with the academic tutors and CAMP lab staff.
  • Monitor academic progress of former students. Refer former students to services necessary for their success as appropriate. Assist former students as needed to ensure their success at the university in such areas as planning, evaluating, and achieving their academic goals, obtaining financial aid, addressing personal problems impacting their academic success (such as time management, money management, health maintenance, interpersonal relations.) Refer former students as appropriate when the student requires other services, such as professional counseling.
  • Assist current and former students with career planning and placement. Advise students on field of study choices, career development, employment opportunities, and prepare them for professional placement. Assist students in obtaining student employment, volunteer opportunities, study abroad, and/or internships. Assist students in identifying and cultivating mentoring relationships.
  • Track progress of current and former students relative to career services and progress toward a degree. Provide the Director with statistical data regarding progress of current and former students.
  • Research scholarship information and disseminate to students; assist students in applying for scholarships. Write letters of recommendation for students who are applying for employment, scholarships, and/or internships. Write support letters for petitions as needed.
  • Collaborate with representatives of the university, public, and private sector to develop professional, employment, and mentoring networks to promote placement of students in available paraprofessional positions and internships. Report to the director any concerns about students and/or community involvement with CAMP.
  • Collaborate with CAMP staff to organize and implement new student orientation/retreat, student conferences, and collaborate with HEP staff to host the annual HEP/CAMP Student Showcase.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, training, and conferences as requested by the Director.
  • Compose various communication documents and presentations in English and Spanish. This includes, but is not limited to, email, information flyers, presentations to farmworker families, and conversations with parents.

This a 10-month position working from August through May.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Computer literacy (e.g. Microsoft Office software, email correspondence).
  • Experience planning and delivering instruction in a classroom or workshop setting.
  • Ability to maintain good public relations - Ability to collaborate with agencies, institutions, and community resources, particularly those serving the migratory/seasonal farmworker population.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Possess good writing and communication skills.
  • Good organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Understanding of academic and financial aid procedures in a post-secondary setting.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or relevant professional experience.
  • Bilingual - read, write and speak (English and Spanish)
  • Must have a valid driver's license


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working with or advising underrepresented or culturally diverse populations

The salary is $37,443 annually and commensurates with experience.
