Department Information

The mission of the Office of Research Administration is to provide exceptional support for Indiana University's research community in order to catalyze research productivity and protect the institution and its research community from risk.

Job Summary

This position is part of the Grants, Finance and Operations division of the Office of Research Administration (ORA). With the right experience and qualifications, this position could be a group leader within the Reporting Division of the Office of Research Administration which would include the following additional responsibilities of coordination of training for new hires: oversight of fellow group members for report timeliness; coordination of access and training for electronic reporting systems; aid fellow Financial Analysts with reporting issues, including escalating issues to the Team Manager as deemed necessary.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves a university-wide role conducting financial analyses of grant expenditures for allowability, allocability and reasonableness to ensure University compliance with all externally funded projects on all campuses.
  • Reviews and interprets sponsored-project awards, contracts, guidelines, policies and regulations to determine the reporting requirements, required documentation, and timelines for all financial reports; designs, creates and submits financial reports and invoices to meet external agencies' requirements.
  • Advises faculty, researchers, departments and other ORA staff to ensure compliance with agency and University policies, guidelines and procedures, and to ensure that expenditures are appropriate for the associated account(s).
  • Maintains, monitors, and updates reporting requirements and schedules to ensure financial reports are submitted in a timely manner as required by the agency and to ensure accuracy of institutional data and records.
  • Has signature authority for all financial reports (e.g., expense reports, invention statements, MBE/WBE reports, invoices, and equipment reports).
  • Participates and advises in policy development related to grants administration, expense allowability and financial compliance.
  • Represents the University during internal and external audits with authority to resolve issues of non-compliance.
General Responsibilities
  • Performs detailed periodic fiscal analysis of income statements, balance sheets, and cash flows and compiles trends to guide financial decisions.
  • Provides specialized financial analysis support using measures such as past financial performance, economic conditions, price, yield, stability, and investment risk.
  • Interprets fiscal policies and acts as a resource to department; may provide guidance to lower-level employees.
  • May serve as fiscal delegate for department accounts.
  • Presents findings using tools such as spreadsheets, charts, graphs, and technical reports.
  • Verifies accuracy of data and makes recommendations for corrections.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in a related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in finance, financial administration, accounting, or related field
Preferred
  • Accounting or financial experience
  • 2 years of experience in research administration or a related field
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
