Our reliability engineering and failure analysis team at Facebook is focused on new technology, from materials to the product level, and actively participates in the development and design of cutting-edge technologies. If so, this would be an exciting opportunity for you to consider.As part of our failure analysis group, you are going to help craft solutions to complex problems. You'll collaborate with various teams to transform hardware components into an integrated reliable product by pushing the boundaries on what we can do in the realm of Oculus, Portal, and the broader Facebook hardware technologies. You will function as a liaison between different groups, develop an understanding in materials by correlating its properties to performance and failures, address failure mechanisms and suggest possible solutions. You will also be expected to get trained on different tools, support material durability studies, develop standard operating protocols, and coordinate the use of multiple instruments. We emphasize on a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to solve technical issues and looking for an excellent team player. We are looking for an experienced individual who can identify and define the right characterization techniques and execute focused characterization projects to drive root-cause analysis. The right candidate is willing to get trained and support others to address needs from various projects. This position strongly partners with cross-functional teams. We are looking for an individual who is a strong team player. He/she must adhere to best-in-class lab practices, maintain an organized and clean laboratory environment, manage sample inventory, follow all lab health and safety regulations. We are looking for a specialist who knows not only how to measure data using a suite of techniques but also can cross-correlate the data and present interpretations focused on the outstanding issue. We want data-oriented approach to solve problems not just showing characterization data using different techniques. The Failure Analysis Engineer may have a focus, and responsibilities assigned to them, related to specific areas on verticals within the team-- such as but not limited to: Photonics, Chemistry, or Polymer.

Failure Analysis Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed root cause analysis on technically complex failures
  • Identify and define appropriate characterization techniques to solve complex problems
  • Cross-correlate data from various techniques to drive towards conclusions
  • Hands-on work with various tools including x-ray imaging, microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Knowledge of the properties of a broad spectrum of materials such as plastics, polymers, ceramics, metals, and alloys
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in advanced material analysis using different techniques
  • Experience in bulk and surface characterization techniques


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's in physics, chemistry, materials science, or related field
  • Functional knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and optical components
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in the realm of root cause analysis
