REPORTS TO: Fabrication Supervisor

SUPERVISES: None, but may instruct / mentor less skilled workers

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates CNC and manual machinery productively and safely to support ship fabrication
  • Ensures that all equipment and tools are operated in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Develops lean manufacturing processes and push for continuous process improvement.
  • Responsible for first time quality.
  • Verifies the length, width, and grade of the plate / tee / profile is correct and corresponds to the associated nest, cut file, drawing, or weld symbol.
  • Checks material flatness and ensure that it falls within Austal USA's Accuracy Control standards.
  • Performs alignment checks prior to cutting, bending or placing, the work piece to ensure that there are no interference issues.
  • Locates and mark bending, cutting, or reference lines on work piece
  • Selects and positions clamps, dies, blades, cutters and other fixtures
  • Develops CNC programs as needed
  • Ensures that all etch data is clear and legible prior to unloading and shipping.
  • Inspects cut quality and parts for visible cut damage prior to unloading.
  • Performs post cut dimensional checks of the cut parts to verify cutting accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and relay findings to your supervisor and maintenance technician.
  • Performs daily pre-operational checklists basic maintenance of all machines.
  • Uses hand torches and mechanized cutting equipment.
  • Reads drawings and understand joint details and apply them to the appropriate edge of the part.
  • Interprets drawings and transfer information, such as weld symbol, profile detail, and layout lines to the part.
  • Ensures that the proper landings, bevel, and chamfer angels are in accordance with the drawing and standard details.
  • Ensures that all slag is removed from the piece part prior to shipping.
  • Will be required to work multiple shifts and overtime as directed by Management.
  • Other job duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma/GED or comparable trade experience.
    • Comparable trade experience is defined as 5 or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, 2 years of experience in shipbuilding, or education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship
  • 4 years of CNC and manual machine operation experience required
  • Experience with manual cutting, mechanized cutting, and operating overhead cranes is required.
  • Must have a strong lean manufacturing mindset and a continuous drive for process improvement.
  • Shipbuilding experience preferred.
  • Nesting software experience preferred.
  • CNC programing experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and work as a group to develop best practices and standards.
  • Ability to receive and carry out written and verbal instruction.
  • Ability to think critically and solve mechanical problems

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES: Candidate must meet Austal USA's basic employment eligibility guidelines.
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit.

Specific physical requirements include the following:

Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel. Perform prolonged standing. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). Ability to work at heights above 12' while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures. Ability to enter 18" x 36" openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

TOOLS: Sanders, grinders, cutting torch, mechanized cutting machines, overhead cranes, cutting torch, applicable machinery components etc.

DIRECTION EXERCISED: Will serve as a mentor to less skilled employees

LIAISES WITH: Supervisor, step-up supervisor, foreman, maintenance, and other tradesmen

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles at or below the PEL, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
