The University of Miami/UHealth Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) has an exciting opportunity for an Executive Director Cancer Center Operations. The Executive Director, Cancer Center Operations serves as an advisor and consultant to senior leadership, develops strategic plans, and monitors the status of all current administrative and operational issues of SCCC Administration. This position ensures compliance with all applicable external laws and regulations, and University policies and procedures. This position reports to the SCCC Associate Director/AVP Research Administration. This role will oversee key areas of SCCC administrative activities including Cancer Center Operations (Grant Development and Scientific Writing, CCSG and FACCA Administration, Events and Program Support, Intramural Funding Programs and Process Improvement), Office of Education and Training Administrative functions, oversite of Administrative Assistant Infrastructure and Pre and Post Award. In this role, the Senior Executive Director, Cancer Center Operations is responsible for identifying funding sources, acquiring funding, setting program policies and objectives and allocating resources. The position will work closely with multiple departments and leadership at the Center and University to communicate research operations and programs objectives and results.


  • Provides operational and administrative oversight of key areas of SCCC administration and ensures that these are in alignment with Cancer Center leadership and strategic plan.

  • Works closely with Executive Director, and SCCC Finance leader on Research Services funding (post-award sponsored projects, and shared resources finance) as reflected in the Cancer Center budget

  • Supports SCCC Program leaders with continuous evaluation and improvement efforts of current programs, program development needs and/or management, such as user surveys, progress reports, annual reviews

  • Collaborates with the AVP of Research Administration and plays a key role in aligning scientific priorities, strategic direction, and policy for SCCC Research Programs and Sponsored Projects

  • Enhance communication and collaboration between the office, SCCC members and program leaders

  • Assess needs of current resources, technology and provides recommendations and/or resources to increment operational support; relies on data and input from others to foresee possible threats or unintended consequences from decisions

  • Chair key meetings with Research leaders and staff to discuss operational issues and solicit recommendations Represents SCCC Research Administration in SCCC meetings as well as in external meetings and/or conferences

  • Collaborates with SCCC leadership to ensure that SCCC Research Programs, and/or special initiatives or projects are supporting and advancing cancer research for all Cancer Center members.

  • Promotes and reinforce the importance of acknowledging SCCC research in publications and funding applications

  • Provides an overview of the assigned areas to AVP Research Administration, SCCC Director and Sr. Leadership

  • Leads SCCC Senior Leadership in assessment of ongoing relevance of existing reports, special events and/or programs, identifies any gaps and/or process improvements in SCCC operations



Minimum Requirements: Education: Ba ch elor's degree in relevant field Experience:Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience required
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Applicable work experience with Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and NCI Designated Cancer Centers

  • A terminal degree in relevant discipline preferred

  • Successful administrative experience in a university, industry or government environment; proven record of promoting research and research partnerships

  • Extensive knowledge about federal and state funding opportunities and trends, national research organizations, career training programs, institutional partnerships, and research collaborations

  • Extensive knowledge about university research environments and infrastructure, current trends in technology transfer, and current federal and state research compliance regulations, policies, and practices

  • Proven ability to promote a working environment that rewards new ideas and innovation builds collaborations, encourages teamwork, and promotes diversity

  • Successful record of planning, managing budgets, and administering significant grants and contracts

  • Proven skills in administering programs, managing professional staff, planning, problem solving and interpersonal relations

  • Strong communication and advocacy skills, equally effective with both internal and external constituents

  • Experience in leadership building and strong interpersonal skills including conflict resolution
