The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at Indiana University Bloomington. Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Manages brand identity and standards
  • Maintains high expectations for quality and integrity in messaging, products, and practices
  • Ensures that messaging prioritizes creative storytelling that is meaningful to the target audiences and delivers strong ROI
  • Establishes long-term operational objectives in consultation with the communications and marketing team
  • Provides strategic direction and guidance on high-priority communications and marketing initiatives
  • Utilizes data and market research to drive decision-making regarding marketing strategy
  • Governs and sets policy across a distributed marketing and communications model of College partners
  • Maintains a collaborative, inclusive, and creative work culture for communications and marketing team
  • Reports regularly to the executive dean of the College on C+M operations, strategy, goals, and progress
  • Advises the executive dean on communications strategy related to externally facing issues and contributes to the development of critical communications as needed
  • Consults with C+M leaders at the campus and university level to assure that the College is informed of and represented in IU strategic planning and operations; represents the College in campus and university-wide C+M meetings
  • Manages relationships with C+M partners at many levels, including IU Studios; the core College and the College's three schools (Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design, Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, and The Media School).
  • Ensures equity and inclusion in C+M practices
  • Manages the hiring, promotion, and performance management of communications and marketing personnel
  • Determines how to allocate communications and marketing resources to best support the work of the C+M team
  • Makes budgetary proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment
  • Prepares reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, and advisory committees
  • Advocates for the advancement of marketing and communications technologies and initiatives as needed in the College
General Responsibilities
  • Directs operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department, large multi-faceted department, or multiple departments.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, sets goals and objectives, determines staffing needs, and directs the work of a team of Communications Generalists and/or Communications Assistants.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and manages processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives.
  • Reviews drafts of communications and projects and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department.
  • Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
  • Assists in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs.
  • Monitors industry trends and best practices, makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager, and assists in implementing recommendations to optimize operations and progress toward objectives.
  • Provides guidance to lower-level Communications Leaders.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 4 years in relevant field
  • 1 years of management experience in relevant field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
