The Opportunity

The Enterprise Architect (EA) proactively and holistically helps and guides the enterprise leaders, product managers, product owners and MGB Digital experience leaders through transformation and optimization initiatives, supporting the formulation of technology strategy based on the stated business strategies, outcomes and capabilities.

The Enterprise Architect (EA) - Research & Education will support the MGB Digital organization by developing technology strategies and providing high-level architecture for all our technology and data services. This includes data platforms and informatics, enterprise research platforms and applications, and research computing capabilities such as AI tools, on-premise and cloud hosting, network connectivity, device strategy, technology and integration platforms, storage, and archive. The role is responsible for ensuring that these strategies are implemented in accordance with established principles and best practices, and for ensuring proper governance is in place. Additionally, this role may directly lead or indirectly manage the work of Solution and/or Technical Architects.

As a key leader in Digital, this individual will collaborate and partner with other enterprise leaders and vendors to strategize, design, implement, and support the digital technologies, tools, and processes that underpin core technology for MGB.

This role will directly report to the VP, Digital Research Operations with a dotted line to the MGB Chief Technology Officer.

The principal duties and responsibilities are:

1. Supports Formulation of Strategy and Guides Execution

• Develop the target architecture to meet the needs and opportunities of Research & Education

• Define and maintain roadmaps required to operationalize technology for a new product / service / platform.

• Tell stories to visualize the future state for technology and platforms and support long-term planning.

2. Builds and Maintains Relationships

• In conjunction with the Digital Research Operations Leadership Team, build relationships with key stakeholders across Research & Education to understand priorities, needs and opportunities to advance and transform academic research through data and technology.

• Relationship management with technology partners and conduct periodic business reviews. Collaborate on innovation opportunities and platform enhancements.

• Support Chief Information Security Officer, Legal, and other compliance groups to ensure the technology meets the desired compliance needs.

• Coordinate with rest of the Enterprise Architecture teams to ensure the right technology configuration is chosen for the applications that will be deployed with appropriate scaling model for future increase in capacity.

• As a standing member of MGB Enterprise architecture council, is accountable for evolving the business capability model for Research & Education based on the business needs.

3. Orchestrates the Delivery of Business Outcomes

• Through understanding priorities, needs and opportunities of Research & Education, develop options and make recommendations for new or changed technology capabilities, considering costs and benefits, operations and impact on researcher experience.

• Ensure publication and communication of Architecture blueprints across organizations. Communicate and educate organization on the elaborate architecture.

• Support and govern design blueprints for deployments in Research & Education.

• Accountable to ensure adherence with Security and Compliance policies and procedures in defining architecture standards for the chosen capabilities.

• Coordinate withing this group to ensure the appropriate risk mitigations are in place for business sustainment.

• Defining features, phases, solution requirements resulting in product roadmaps across several domains
4. Facilitates Innovation

• Analyze trends and disruptions and assess their impact on targeted business outcomes in Research & Education.

• Support scaling of innovation by partnering with platform teams and 3rd party technology partners

5. Plans and Manages the IT Portfolio

• Work with platform teams to build architecture roadmaps into portfolio planning

• Define technology rationalization strategy and build into portfolio plans and long range budget planning.

6. Support Solution / Technical Architecture Development

Solution / Technical Architecture refers to the process of designing and organizing the components of a system or application to meet specified requirements. Based on analyzing the functional and non-functional requirements of a system, support the team to carry out the following;

• Design: Developing a high-level design that outlines the structure and components of the solution.

• Integration: Ensuring that different components and systems work together seamlessly.

• Scalability: Designing the solution to handle growth and increased demand.

• Performance: Optimizing the solution for efficient and effective operation.

• Security: Addressing security concerns and implementing measures to protect the solution.

• Flexibility and Extensibility: Designing the solution to be adaptable and easily extended in the future.

Qualifications
Qualifications

The key qualifications for this role are:

• A Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field is desired. Advanced degrees, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Information Systems or Data Science, can be advantageous, especially for understanding the business impact of technology decisions.

• Overall 15+ years of professional IT experience with 3+ years of Enterprise Architecture

• Relevant Professional certifications like TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework), Zachman Framework, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Certifications in cloud computing platforms such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert can be beneficial.

Skills and Abilities for Success

• Experience of managing technology in an academic research environment is highly beneficial, particularly in AI, data, analytics and scientific computing.

• Minimum 15 years of experience in IT architecture, development and operations. Must have proven experience in project management, strategic planning, and budget management.

• Ability to recruit, retain, and direct the solution/technical architecture team(s).

• Strong leadership and communication skills are crucial and ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and a strategic mindset are also important.

• Ability to adapt to changing business, operating models and emerging technologies.

• Coach and mentor other architects, product owners/managers and business stakeholders to instill architectural thinking

Supervisory and Fiscal Responsibilities

• Be a member of the Digital Research Operations leadership team.

• It is expected to functionally and/or directly manage a small number enterprise, solution and technical architects to support data, cloud, infrastructure and platform architectures.

• This role will significantly influence the budget planning and management of Digital Research Operations.

• Contribute to the cost optimization, identifying ways to reduce expenses without sacrificing quality, including supporting negotiations with vendor contracts and selecting cost-effective technologies.

• Contribute to conduct investment analysis to assess the financial viability of new Digital Research Operations investments, analyzing return on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO) to guide strategic decisions.

Working Conditions

• Hybrid working model, this position requires local travel to MGB sites, vendors, and/or conferences at Assembly Row and Local MGB sites or hospitals.

• Hospital work environment working conditions include possible exposure to diseases or infections and may require safety gear (PPE) such as gloves and mask.

• Normal office working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; or hear; use hands to finger; handle; or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop; kneel; or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
