Examples of Work

Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level engineering assignments in the civil engineering discipline, under the direct control, supervision, and review of a professional licensed engineer. Assists other engineers in project location, development, design, construction, and/or other engineering functions and programs. Assignment provides learning opportunities to apply engineering principles and acquire an understanding of federal and state rules and regulations, and the employing agency's engineering standards and procedures.Participates in the design of various complex rural and municipal roadway construction projects including resurfacing and reconstruction projects. Performs the design of horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway cross-sections, guardrail, erosion control, and other roadway features. Performs hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, designs culverts, storm sewers and other drainage features, and prepares drainage structure cross-section plans. Computes wetland impacts and designs mitigation sites. Performs design and analysis work to support the NEPA process. Prepares preliminary and final roadway construction project plans and other project deliverable. Drafts miscellaneous design details. Prepares estimates of construction project quantities and costs. Performs data collection, background research, note reduction, calculations, analysis and documentation of engineering related decisions. Writes project descriptions, special provisions, alternatives analysis, and other project documents. Maintains project correspondence files and plans in an accurate and up to date condition. Prepares for and participates in project related meetings and field inspections. Coordinates several roadway design projects concurrently within the Division and Department, including consultant engineers and public service agencies such as cities, counties, and utilities. May aid and assist other engineering personnel.
Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in engineering. OR Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E. license).

PREFERRED: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Successful completion of FE/EIT certification. Experience and knowledge in the design of roadways, streets, culverts, and storm sewers. Experience and knowledge in the preparation of highway construction plans, construction estimates, highway construction, highway inspection, and highway surveying. Experience in road design which includes coordinating projects, making technical engineering computations and knowledge of modern methods and techniques of highway construction, maintenance and materials. Experience in MicroStation, Bentley Civil Powered by Open Roads Technology, ProjectWise, and GEOPAK.

OTHER: Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program . If applicants do not have an FE/EIT certificate, they will be required to obtain one within one year of hire and applicants will be expected to pursue their professional engineers license at the first available opportunity. Regular and reliable attendance is also required. A valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) standards, AASHTO's - A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets and NDOT Standard Specifications for Highway Construction; basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects including engineering, surveying, hydrology, design standards and geometrics. Skill in organizational and public relations as well as quality verbal and written communication.
