Position Summary

We seek a self-starting, team-oriented engineer to drive the design of hardware-based ship automation systems. You should enjoy designing and integrating complex hardware/software systems of systems, and maturing concepts to maturity in collaboration with mechanical, marine and electrical engineers and software developers. You will be part of a growing team that advances Connected, Conditionally Unmanned and Fully Autonomous technologies for military and commercial sea-going vessels, in particular unmanned surface vessels.

Responsibilities

You will perform the following tasks:

  • Design 1500+ point machinery monitoring and automation systems organized as a mixed protocol/mixed media rapid spanning tree/mesh network (emphasis on Profinet, Modbus, and CANbus). Specifically

o Develop requirements for machinery-control hardware to meet ship automation requirements

o Design hardware and software interfaces

o Evaluate and select third-party automation components and systems

o Design and implement data networks to connect autonomy servers, PLC-based automation controllers, and field devices

o Specify and select servers, HMIs, network equipment and end devices
  • Design, develop, and document the hardware and data interfaces to PLC-based automation and PC-based autonomy controllers

o BOMs, O&M manuals, tech briefs, bid specs, and ICDs

o Catalog existing documentation and create system level drawings
  • Develop fabrication assembly drawings, diagrams and schematics
  • Collaborate with Hull and Platform engineers to plan and oversee shipyard work to install monitoring and automation system hardware
  • Provide expert input on operation of systems, sub systems, attached equipment and end devices to the modeling and simulation team
  • Support system integration and test

o Perform systems integration, troubleshooting, process analysis, and test as prerequisites for formal system qualification tests
  • Develop and execute test plans, trials and procedures
  • Review and contribute to test plans in support of system verification and validation (V&V)
  • Support failure analysis to improve system designs


Required Candidate Qualifications
  • Active US Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • BS or Advanced Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering or related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in
  • designing large scale integrated systems featuring PC and PLC-based control
  • developing and fielding PLC-based automation software
  • selecting and interfacing to sensors or actuators, preferably on unmanned vehicles
  • integrating complex software-intensive systems of systems
  • using industry-standard CAD/CAE applications to design, document, and evaluate distributed automation systems
  • Experience with formal software development and verification/test processes
  • Ability to collaborate and perform as a team member
  • Willingness to travel in support of hardware installation, integration and test


Desired Candidate Qualifications
  • Experience designing or operating shipboard, aircraft, or modern automotive electromechanical systems
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs
  • Experience with requirements development and test in an MBSE-driven environment
