Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The EEG Technician performs standard electroencephalogram (EEG) tracings, and performs standard EEG recordings. The EEG Technician transports equipment, positions patients, attaches electrodes and provides appropriate instructions and explanations to patients and their families.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health values
  • Performs standard electroencephalogram (EEG) tracings
  • Performs standard EEG recordings (awake, sleep, hyperventilation of photic stimulation, nasopharyngeal, etc)
  • Transports EEG equipment to perform tracings on immobile patients
  • Positions patients, attaches electrodes and provides appropriate instructions to patients
  • Analyzes patients' medical records to obtain pertinent information/history, which could have a bearing on procedure (e.g. signs of head injury, epilepsy, etc)
  • Ensures electrical safety of patients at all times
  • Explains the recording procedures to the patient and any family members present
  • Maintains daily log of all EEG procedures and patients tested
  • Cleans equipment, makes minor repairs/adjustments, maintains necessary supplies, and orders/stock supplies as needed
  • Transports charge slips to Data Processing
  • Prepares monthly listing and periodic reports of inpatient and outpatient tests/services
  • Participates in in-service education and EEG conferences
  • Assists with scheduling appointments and maintaining referral files
  • Assists with Botox injection procedures
  • Performs electromyography (EMG) procedures which include monitoring test for nerve/muscle response, in addition to detecting/eliminating from consideration all artifacts
  • Makes computer tracings; records reactions for study by physician, altering recording procedure if necessary to amplify specific abnormalities and facilitate interpretation by physician

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program for EEG Technicians, or equivalent training
  • One year of job-related experience and/or on-the-job-training

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to alter activities and behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e. adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, adult) as described in the area/unit age-specific and/or job-specific competencies; maintains age-specific and job-specific competencies as described according to department/area/and unit specific competencies
  • Ability to use and maintain EEG instruments, impedance meter, photic stimulator chloridizine machine, and electrode applicator apparatus
  • Ability to use effective interpersonal communication skills with tact and diplomacy
  • Knowledge of electrophysiological studies (i.e., evoked potentials, prolonged EEG monitoring)
  • Ability to recognize normal/abnormal tracings and adverse reactions to procedures
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow record keeping procedures and departmental and hospital policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served; must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data and interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs
  • Ability to use age-appropriate communication and cognitive skills detailed in the department/area/unit job-specific/age-specific competencies
  • Ability to work with all kinds of people (sick/well patients), run legible EEG tracings, work under pressure (time limitations, patient volume, patients in stress/crisis)
