Position Information: DescriptionThe vision of the College of Engineering and Mines (CEM) in the area of Energy Studies is to pursue new frontiers in energy education and research that enables the development of the next generation of energy experts and integrated energy system technologies that are economically competitive, reliable, sustainable, and politically and environmentally acceptable. To realize this vision, the CEM has established the following mission for our program in Energy Studies: 1) Provide a well-trained work force cognizant of the issues facing the energy industry today and in the future generations by engaging students in education that is focused on the technical, social, political, environmental, and economic needs of the world-wide community; 2) Facilitate the coordination of CEM’s multidisciplinary energy education, research, development and commercialization activities in partnership with UND campus units, other NDUS campuses, and federal, state, and industrial partners; and 3) Develop a multi-disciplinary scientifically balanced research portfolio aimed at accelerating the implementation of efficient and environmentally sustainable energy production technologies.This position will work directly with the CEM Associate Dean for Research to develop and implement education and research initiatives that align with UND’s and CEM’s Strategic Plans. This position will focus on developing and conducting graduate degree programs and research projects aimed at solving environmental, efficiency, and reliability problems in the broad area of energy. This position’s key functions in the unit include the management of personnel and programs. The position will work with faculty, staff and students to develop teams to respond to funding opportunities in all areas of energy.Duties & ResponsibilitiesTo ensure the objectives and goals of the college are met, the Director of Energy Studies will have the following responsibilities:

    Provide direction in the development of the vision and strategic initiatives in the area of Energy Studies for the College of Engineering and Mines (CEM).Management and Coordination of Budgets, Personnel and Equipment for utilization in assigned program areas.Ensure Energy Engineering Graduate programs are meeting expectations of the UND Graduate School and CEM.Organization and development of CEM’s proposals to clients in areas related to Energy Studies accounting for availability of resources and efficiency in meeting client needs.Expand CEM’s research portfolio by advancing and increasing funded projects in areas identified as priority initiatives in the CEM Strategic Plan.  General administrative duties and obligations required for successful management, operation and leadership of Energy Studies staff and faculty to ensure successful completion of programs, projects and initiatives.Promote inter-disciplinary research by locating prospective human and capital resources from various UND units to participate in proposal opportunities and funded research.

The ability to build coalitions internally and with federal and state agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit and private sector organizations, foreign governments, or international organizations to achieve common goals.Demonstration of an established network of contacts in the energy industry.
Minimum Requirements
    Doctoral degree (or within one year of receiving) in engineering.At least 5 years in project management role.Experience managing complex projects with budgets greater than $500,000.Proven funding record as demonstrated by at least $2,500,000 in funding as a Principal Investigator.Successful completion of criminal history records check.
