Compensation and Appointment

Position: Assistant Professor or higher rank dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Remuneration/Salary: $100,000+ commensurate with qualifications.

Both the COBRE and the CTR are funded through the NIH Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program, and both are housed at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS). Both research centers collaborate with communities, academic institutions, and agency partners and are focused on community-engaged research to improve population health outcomes and to reduce health disparities. The COBRE is in Year 1 of 5 and is renewable twice for up to 15 years of supported research. The CTR is in Year 3 of 5, and we are in process of developing the application for a second 5-year cycle of funding. The focus of the CTR will expand its scope beyond cancer and the center will become the Dakota Community Collaborative on Translational Activity.SMHS has an opening for a Director of the Community Engagement and Outreach Core (CEOC). This is a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty role at the rank of Assistant Professor Scientist Scholar, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The CEOC Director will work in close collaboration with the COBRE Principal Investigator and the CTR Principal Investigator. The CEOC Director will also have the opportunity to teach and advise students in the Public Health Program at the Master of Public Health (MPH) level or in the Indigenous Health PhD program. The Director will also have the opportunity and to build a research portfolio focused on community-engaged research.The Director will supervise a CEOC Coordinator and Three Tribal Coordinators. The CEOC Coordinator will be housed at UND and will supervise Graduate Assistants and Research Assistants working with the CEOC. The Director will work closely with the COBRE and CTR PIs and will have regular communications regarding goal setting and progress reporting. The Director will also assist in preparing the CTR renewal application.Roles and percentages of time include:
        •     60% Director,
        •     20% Research/Scholarly Activity
        •     15% Teaching/advising
        •      5% ServiceCore Administration & Community Engagement

The CEOC Director will provide mentorship and will work closely with each of the individual research project leaders (PLs) and will participate in all COBRE Administrative Core meetings to ensure appropriate tribal engagement in project coordination, implementation, and community outreach and engagement. The CEOC Director will assist the individual PLs with community stakeholder engagement to include: tribal and urban AI community engagement training and technical assistance; data collection (key informant interviews, focus groups, etc.); monitor compliance with the COBRE and tribal IRB procedures; assist in developing and delivering a Community Engagement training module; develop additional community engagement curricula; supervise the CEOC Coordinator and assist in identifying and supervising three Tribal Coordinators from participating tribal communities. The CEOC Director will work closely with the COBRE PI in communication with tribal stakeholders as needed to promote bidirectional education among the tribal and research communities. 

An initial task for the CEOC Director will be to work closely with the COBRE PI to identify, hire and train the three half-time Tribal Coordinators and a Graduate Assistant (GA) to work with the CEOC. The roles for the Tribal Coordinators and GA will be to facilitate communication with tribal leaders and community stakeholders and to serve as liaisons between the COBRE and AI communities. Activities will include scheduling key informant interviews, focus groups, and regular communication and progress reporting with tribal leaders and other community stakeholders. Tribal Coordinators will be located in the tribal communities and might include existing tribal health program staff or be Tribal College faculty or students, thus further building research capacity over time.

Key outcomes of the work of the CEOC will be to continue to develop and refine AI-specific, evidence-based practices to address health disparities, and to develop an inventory of tribally-based health priorities and research priorities. These outcomes will be accomplished through key informant interviews, focus groups, and facilitated discussions with tribal stakeholders.

Teaching & Advising

UND MPH Courses are taught in both synchronous and asynchronous/online formats, and the Indigenous Health PhD curriculum is offered primarily in a synchronous format using distance technologies (e.g. Zoom). The CEOC Director will teach or co-teach courses in the MPH and/or PhD programs as well as teaching medical students on topics of diversity and inclusion, depending on areas of expertise. The Director will also advise MPH and PhD students. 

Research

The CEOC Director will develop a research portfolio focused on community-engaged research. The Director will also collaborate with Indigenous health faculty on developing externally funded projects based on the Director’s areas of professional expertise. The CEOC Director will also work with graduate students and facilitate CEOC research assistantship opportunities

Service

Service activities may include service to the profession, university, or school.  School and university service may include participating in committees, and service to the profession may include serving on appropriate boards and coalitions designed to advance Indigenous public health. Minimum Requirements
  • Terminal degree in a public health discipline, medicine, clinical science, epidemiology, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 year track record of engagement with underserved communities, including Tribal communities. 
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience and proficiency in using distance technologies for communications (webinars, online modules, or tele-video, etc.). 
  • Driver’s license required. Travel is required throughout North and South Dakota’s rural and Tribal communities.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history record check.

Preferred Requirements
  • Experience teaching at the graduate level.
  • Expertise in Indigenous Health.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Research experience working with tribal, rural, diverse, or other underserved populations
