Position Summary::

The Director of Campus Health, Safety and Security leads the Campus Safety and Security Department, and is responsible for the overall protection of life and property at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College's campuses and centers. The Director will develop and coordinate the college's emergency preparedness plans, establish, and nurture contacts within and outside the college to prevent and solve safety and security issues, and proactively create programs and training in support of safety, security, and emergency preparedness. The Director will identify, communicate, and update college operating procedures, goals, objectives, and responsibilities of subordinates to provide optimum safety and security at all college locations. The Director will also organize, coordinate, and manage patrol services as needed at college locations.

The Director will create and oversee safety and security training programs for the college and ensure outreach occurs such that all students and employees are given the opportunity to be trained regarding emergency preparedness/response, use of protective equipment, and accident protocols.

The Director will administer the College's Occupational Safety & Health Program; ensure the various Divisions and Departments have appropriate safety programs in place (lock-out/tag-out, PPE.), and are using them effectively. The Director will develop and offer general safety-related training to all employees, and ensure departments offer safety training specific to their employees' needs. The Director will ensure that safety-related investigations occur for every accident that is reported at the college and identifies root causes and proposed corrections.

The Director will administer public safety and security-related software systems, file and record compliance reports as required by the Clery Act and other federal and state regulations related to security and emergency preparedness, and coordinate data and concerns with other departments of the College.

Staff Required Education/Experience::

  • Bachelor's degree in a safety or security-related field, and ten (10) years experience in the management of a Public Safety or facilities-related safety and security program; or
  • Associate degree in a related field, and fifteen (15) years of related professional experience in Public Safety, or facility safety and security.

Desired Education/Experience/Skills::

  • OSHA 30-Hour Administration of Safety Course (if no certification employer will pay for training).
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training in emergency management.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities::

  • Experience in campus or school safety/security.
  • Public speaking, presentation, and people skills.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse college environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and develop written safety and security procedures.
  • Good comprehension and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and meet eligibility requirements to drive a college vehicle.
  • Ability to travel and respond to multiple campus locations on security or OSHA issues.
