Summary and Scope of Position:The Development Officer (Major Gifts) is responsible for soliciting, cultivating, and stewarding annual, major, and planned gift donors for Ursinus College. The position helps develop and actively manage a portfolio with a minimum of 150+ major gift prospects/donors rated $10,000+. The Development Officer must be willing to travel extensively in the local area, as well as in regions across the country as assigned. The Development Officer will collaborate with colleagues in the Advancement Office and campus partners to create and implement strategies that result in major gifts for the College. The Development Officer will work collaboratively with fellow development officers, the Ursinus Fund team (annual giving), Advancement Leadership, and Advancement Services on prospect portfolio management, strategy, and implementation of best practices in moves management. The Development Officer will be assigned a number of liaison assignments to other departments across campus and/or be responsible for specific affinity groups.This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. Specific Responsibilities:

  • Complete 12-15 face-to-face and/or virtual meetings for the purposes of identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding an assigned portfolio of approximately 150 prospects capable of making gifts of $10,000 or more
  • Seeks to actively qualify and disqualify prospects regularly based on face-to-face and/or virtual meetings
  • Works collaboratively with campus partners and seeks to engage campus partners on prospect visits
  • Spends considerable time in the areas of California, Florida, and/or other territories as assigned by the Associate Vice President
  • Create detailed cultivation/solicitation/stewardship plans for assigned prospects as appropriate
  • Appreciates the annual Ursinus Fund goal and works to solicit prospects in support of Ursinus Fund priorities, especially given the opportunity to capture new prospects for the 1869 Society
  • Document all contacts in Raiser’s Edge per established Advancement Office guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Manage donor relationships according to Advancement Office’s established prospect management guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Ursinus College history, academic and extracurricular programs, and its faculty, students, and administration; maintain a thorough understanding of the College’s current priorities and initiatives of the faculty and administration
  • Attend and support appropriate alumni and donor engagement events related to assigned responsibilities; participates in departmental and professional training programs to increase expertise in profession
  • Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 5 years of fundraising experience required, with preference for experience in higher education
  • Self-starting strategic thinker whose hallmark qualities include being a self-starter, persistent, creative, personable, and possessing a desire to succeed
  • Willing to learn and accept coaching and training
  • Must possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills and an ability to relate to a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds
  • A personal commitment to excellence in higher education and the mission of a top-tier college of liberal arts, and the ability to work in a goal-oriented environment are required
  • A valid driver’s license and use of personal car
  • Ability to sit for extended periods at personal computer performing related functions
  • Availability and flexibility to travel regularly
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends, as necessary
  • Departmental Accountabilities:
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues and team members in the Advancement office and throughout the College. Participates in Advancement Office meetings and other key College staff meetings
  • Provides support to office leadership, as needed, for priority projects. Serves to help educate faculty and staff about the Advancement office and its mission and goals
  • Understands the importance of building a culture of philanthropy
  • Possesses knowledge and experience with computer programs that support the Advancement Department including Microsoft Office programs and Raiser’s Edge
