Dakota State University (DSU) seeks a dynamic, driven leader to serve as Dean of the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences. DSU is an innovative, thriving institution with the specific mission to prepare cyber-savvy graduates who are leaders, innovators, problem solvers, and learners that live lives of positive purpose and consequence in all fields. The university is one of only 10 in the country with National Security Agency (NSA) Center of Academic Excellence designations in Cyber Operations, Cyber Defense and Cyber Defense Research. Our faculty are some of the nation's top authorities on preventing, detecting, and battling digital crime, focused on cyber security, ethical hacking, cyber operations, and artificial intelligence. They engage students in robust research and service partnerships with the NSA, DHS and the US National Science Foundation, among others. Beacom College degrees and courses are deeply connected through interdisciplinary programming with our College of Business and Information Systems, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Education.

Information about The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences:

The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences currently offers five undergraduate programs, including Computer Science, Cyber Operations, Network and Security Administration, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Game Design. Two master programs, including a Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) with specializations in Cyber Operations and Artificial Intelligence and a Master of Science in Cyber Defense (MSCD). The Beacom College also offers three doctoral programs, including Ph.D. in Computer Science, Ph.D. in Cyber Operations, and Ph.D. in Cyber Defense. The Beacom College is the largest college at DSU. The college has more than 1,200 students including both undergraduate and graduate students.

Among the exciting things happening at Dakota State we have a major public-private partnership in DSU RISING, a gift-driven campaign in two phases, totaling $130 Million. DSU RISING has already produced several major new opportunities and facilities on campus: The Beacom Institute of Technology, the Madison CyberLabs (cyber-related research and technology application across many industries), the Applied Research Lab (DSU-ARL), and the Paulson Cyber Incubator and Entrepreneurial Center.

New projects funded and in process include the extension of DSU's Applied Research Corporation (ARC) to a new facility in Sioux Falls, expansion of the number of graduates from the Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences, and the launch of the statewide Governors' Cyber Academy (K-12 cyber education program).

Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and develops faculty within The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences, including participating in recruitment, selection, orientation, retention, professional development, and performance reviews.
  • Responsible for degree and curriculum assessment and accreditation.
  • Promotion and strategic planning of new curriculum to ensure consistency with mission of the University and College.
  • Establish priorities and plans for program development and faculty development.
  • Ensure that administrative processes in college comply with the terms of University policy (i.e. workload, P&T evaluations, Annual reviews, faculty handbook).
  • Coordinate or schedule semester course offerings, participate in registration process, and provide academic counseling for students.
  • Prepare budget requests reflecting the need and priorities of the College.
  • Oversee and execute the ongoing administration of the allocated budget.
  • Formulate short- and long-range plans for the meeting the goals of the College.
  • Work in collaboration with other Deans across campus to define and articulate areas of joint responsibility to fulfill the general mission of the University.
  • Collaborate with members of Admissions and Student Affairs to oversee College undergraduate and graduate student recruitment, advising, and retention activities.

Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate degree in a related field from an accredited university.
  • Credentials commensurate with an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Demonstrated leadership, administrative, and supervisory experience, including conducting faculty and staff reviews and mediating faculty issues, grievances, and appeals.
  • Highly developed skills in written and oral communication, human relations, and creative problem solving.
  • Commitment to enhancing and maintaining diversity among faculty, staff and students.
  • Experience in formulating and articulating sound policies and ability to identify, resolve and consult on a wide variety of administrative and personnel issues.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget oversight for academic areas.
  • Knowledge or experience with the Higher Learning Commission and ABET accreditation processes is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience initiating, developing and implementing articulation agreements.
  • Ability to engage with a variety of external stakeholders to promote the university, college academic programs, college research endeavors, and university initiatives.
  • Keen understanding of retention strategies.
