Job Purpose

Toro is looking for an intellectually curious problem solver to join our team as a data scientist and engineer. You will have a passion for using data-driven management tools and approaches that improve agronomic, economic, and sustainability to approve eco demonstrate outcomes.This position will support our continuing mission to improve sustainability through data-driven approaches to managing landscapes. Working in Toro's Center for Technology, Research, and Innovation (CTRI) alongside a team of engineers and scientists, your primary focus will be on data modeling and management. You will apply modern data science approaches to creating informative and predictive data systems in a Research & Development context.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain datasets and pipeline architecture for prototype sensor and measurement platforms including collaboration to facilitate data ingest from prototype field devices
  • Model and analyze large datasets to test research hypotheses using modern data science and engineering tools
  • Develop communication and visualization tools that convey the application and implementation of computational models to internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in ethnographic research to identify value-added applications for sensing and data. Assist with field operations to deploy sensing and data collection systems
  • Assist in testing, maintenance, and operation of currently deployed electronic and mechanical landscape data collection systems
  • Consult with researchers, engineers, and marketing staff to define hypotheses and conceptualize experiments pertaining to use of data and information in customer applications
  • Engage with internal and external customers in support of other research and development activities, as assigned
  • Be an integral part of a team dedicated to driving sustainability through data

Job Qualifications:
  • Master of Science degree in Data Science, Computer Science, GIS, or Engineering is required. Related fields of study with experience working with relevant big data tools and analysis will also be considered
  • Minimum of two to four years' of experience.
  • Familiarity with landscape-scale maintenance practices and sustainability issues will be beneficial
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn about customer applications for data and information that motivate technology development.
  • Strong skills with programming and scripting languages used for manipulating, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing large datasets and associated data products (e.g. Python, R, Java, C++, PHP, SQL, etc.)
  • Experience with geospatial software packages or libraries such as ArcGIS, QGIS, GDAL, Arcpy, etc., (preferred)
  • Proven ability to design data pipelines to collect, ingest, format, and process data from physical systems and disconnected datasets to produce actionable information
  • Working knowledge of one or more development tool stacks used to develop web services for IoT device data (preferred)
  • Experience working with relational and non-relational databases to store and recall data from disparate systems for subsequent analysis
