GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the supervision of the Senior Operations Manager and the Practice Manager, this position is responsible for independently performing a variety of echocardiogram exams, following Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cardiac Ultrasound Laboratory echocardiography protocols and writing preliminary echocardiography report to interpreting physician. This professional also has the responsibility for assisting with training Cardiac Sonographer Students and /or Cardiac Sonographer Level I.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform comprehensive and high-quality echocardiograms following MGH echocardiography protocol.
• Utilize a variety of techniques, such as 2DE, M-mode, Doppler, Agitated saline contrast, Ultrasound Enhancement Agents (UEA), 2D strain or 3DE, etc.
• Obtain the necessary and accurate measurements and writing preliminary report for interpreting physician in timely manner.
• Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information to ensure an appropriate imaging technique were obtained.
• Apply independent judgment during the echocardiography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images. As necessary, acquire additional ultrasound imaging to facilitate optimal diagnostic results for the interpreting physician.
• Be able to effectively handle emergency situations.
• Familiar to a variety of ultrasound equipment (i.e. Philips, GE, etc.).
• Maintain all ultrasound equipment to solve minor operating problems and report all malfunctions to appropriate service provider.
• Perform expected volume of studies- minimum 7 studies /day for 8-hour shift, or 9 studies/day for 10-hour shift in a consistent basis.
• Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct echocardiography examinations in accordance with infections disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
• Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the echocardiography examination.
• Use proper patient positioning tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer.
• Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient's ability to understand.
• Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards with excellent interpersonal and patient service skills.
• Be able to report to work regularly on time, and prepared.
• Be able to work independently and self-motivated.
• Essential computer skills, including operating systems, word processing, database use, electronic mail, and other office management systems, such as echocardiographic laboratory reporting software, image archiving, i.e. Picture Archiving and Communications Software (PACS) and EPIC system.
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g. HIPAA) and facility policies, and procedures.
• Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Cardiac Sonographer.
• Assist with training Cardiac Sonographer Students and /or Cardiac Sonographer Level I.
• Participate in research projects.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current licensure as a registered cardiac sonographer.
• Minimum of associate degree (or ultrasonography equivalent) with RDCS or CCI credential.
• Bachelor's degree preferred.
• At least 1 year experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Ability to lift approximately 20 lbs.
• Must be able to push a 300lb ultrasound equipment throughout the hospital when assigned to a portable rotation.
• Must be able to move small furniture, medical equipment (with proper permission of medical staff) when performing portable exams.
