Overview

The Commercial & SBA Loan Underwriter is responsible for the generation, underwriting and management of all new and existing commercial loans, consisting primarily of C&I, CRE and SBA 7(a) loans. This person is responsible for the preparation and presentation of new credit requests, conducting annual reviews and recommending approval or denial of each. The Commercial & SBA Loan Underwriter will input loan spreads, analyze financial statements and write a detailed credit memorandum supporting the credit decision. In addition, will partner with the commercial lenders to pre-screen requests, recommend increases, modifications, or provide a liquidation recommendation as-needed. This position will play an integral role in a growing business banking by efficiently underwriting and structuring credit facilities that meet the needs of the credit union while at the same time mitigating overall risk and exposure.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-screen credit requests to determine viability of the request
  • Collaborate with other divisions within the credit union; grow loan sales
  • Research and resolve problems or discrepancies
  • Provide quality member/customer service promptly through various communication methods
  • Stay abreast of and maintain/ensure compliance with all rules and regulations pertaining to applicable lending functions, including all relevant state and federal laws and guidelines
  • Administer all phases of an annual review to include; the collection and analyzing of financial data, credit memo preparation and the documentation of the credit files
  • Possess strong understanding of financial ratios
  • Assess the quality of the business assets pledged as collateral and understand the liquidation ramifications
  • Review credit reports and UCC's on an annual basis to ensure integrity of our lien and collateral
  • Evaluate financial information provided by the borrower; cash flow analysis, personal and business tax returns and business financial statements
  • Ensure all credit recommendations are based on sound credit underwriting principles and in accordance with the existing MBL policy
  • Monitor loan covenants monthly, quarterly and annually
  • Interview potential borrowers and go on joint calls with the Lenders as needed to determine viability of a request
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Remain cognizant of and adheres to NWFCU policies and procedures as well as regulations pertaining to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)
Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, Bachelor's degree in business or related field desired
  • Minimum 5 years' experience underwriting commercial or small business loans, with knowledge in C&I, CRE, SBA 7(a) and 504 credit review
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations governing business and consumer lending practices as well as collection practices
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail & confidentiality
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and/or with members
  • Ability to review and analyze or interpret data and documentation and to make decisions regarding subsequent actions
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct management supervision
  • Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness as a self-starter
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Ability to travel to NWFCU's corporate office located in Herndon, VA as required
  • Must be able to work the hours of M-F 8-4:30
