The Collection System Technician performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, & manual work in the repairing, cleaning, locating & inspection of the wastewater collections system; operate a variety of light construction equipment & wastewater system cleaning & maintenance.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB DUTIES
- Perform a variety of tasks related to the Closed-Circuit Televising (CCTV) of the City's wastewater collection, & related appurtenances; regularly performs a variety of functions, & technical tasks relevant to CCTV operations & responsibilities; possess the knowledge & understanding needed to use CCTV equipment & other heavy equipment, vehicles, power tools, & hand tools utilized in the televising, maintenance, cleaning & repair of the City's wastewater collection system
- Responsible charge of operating heavy equipment including a backhoe, combination high pressure flusher, sewer combination truck & CCTV inspection truck
- Performs a variety of activities associated with the installation, modification, maintenance, & repair of sewer & storm drain facilities & equipment
- Locates & cleans sewer & storm drains, lift station, wastewater facilities, vaults, & other confined spaces
- Utilizes proper safety techniques & uses equipment in accordance with VNA safety policies & procedures; operates a variety of light, medium & heavy-duty motorized equipment & vehicles such as a sewer combination truck, dump truck, pick-up trucks, CCTV inspection truck & performs other related duties
- Sit to drive or ride in vehicle, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, & twist while getting in & out of trenches, mixing mortar, & working in sewage; perform simple & power grasping, pushing & pulling, fine manipulation, use feet to operate foot controls, lift of carry weight of 60 pounds, hear traffic noise, & observe oncoming traffic for safety
- Ability to be on call nights & weekends to work overtime in response to emergency situations & alarms
- Must live within 60 minutes of the WWTP to respond to emergencies, work shift, on-call, weekends, & holidays as assigned.
- Learn, observe all safety precautions as required by the Company, including, but not limited to, state & federal General Industry Safety Directives, may be required to enter confined space
- Understand & carry out oral & written directions

- Must have the ability to diagnose basic and routine process and mechanical problems and take remedial corrective action.


Educational Background:

  • A combination equal to a high school diploma & experience in the operation & maintenance of a collections system or wastewater treatment plant, or related field
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally & in writing
  • Maintaining safe & efficient working conditions including housekeeping
  • Ability to perform considerable walking, climbing, moderate to heavy lifting & carrying
  • Possession of & ability to maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License is required
  • Ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver's License within one year of appointment. Must meet all written, physical, testing & notification requirements
  • established by the Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Must possess or able to obtain a Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance certificate issued by California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) within 18 months of appointment are required
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen & criminal background check
  • Ability to obtain NAASCO certification within 12 months of commencement of employment


Experience/Knowledge:

  • Safe work practices & safety regulations pertaining to the operation & transportation of the equipment & to the work performed.
  • Pertinent federal, state, & local codes, laws, & regulations including traffic laws, ordinances, & rules involved in the Collections program.
  • Practices & procedures of traffic control
  • Principles & practices of routine & preventive maintenance on related equipment
  • Proper procedures used in the maintenance & repair of hand & power tools
  • Materials, methods, terminology, & tools used in the maintenance & repair of wastewater collection & related systems
  • Principles & practices of record keeping
  • Occupational hazards & standard safety practices
  • Work is performed primarily in an outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, & hot desert temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work & or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces & rough terrain; work at heights; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings & weekends
