SUMMARY
The Clinical Terminologist (ICD-10 Coding Expert) supports ICD-10 use based on the federally released SNOMED-CT to ICD coding map, augmenting the federal map to meet agency-specific ICD-10-CM requirements. The content delivered helps support the electronic health record and related applications. This position is part of a team that evaluates, plans and executes efforts to extend the scope and quality of customer terminologies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Works and communicates with software engineers, clinical specialists, product analysts, test engineers, in identifying appropriate terminology standards and mapping of customer terminologies to these standards.

Formulates sequences of SNOMED-to-ICD conditional mapping rules, which apply patient/visit-specific parameters (age, sex, trimester, etc.) to generate the appropriate suggested reimbursement codes. Works with engineers to automate the generation of such rules to the extent possible.

Receives and applies feedback from clinical reviewer of SNOMED-to-ICD map rules.

Addresses requests for ICD-10-CM clarification or assistance, as needed by customers, engineers and business owners.

Reviews updates to ICD-10-CM and updates client content where needed. Helps maintain a predictable update cycle for the client emphasizing minimal impact to end-users.

Provides technical expertise in ICD-10-CM (required). Prefer experience with SNOMED CT.

Maintains customer satisfaction through a combination of meeting performance objectives, frequent communication and developing the relationship so that collaboration and consultative solutions-oriented approaches are possible.

Proactively manages changes in project scope, identifies potential crises and assists with devising contingency plans.

Develops and delivers progress reports such as project metrics and project status.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Bachelor of Science degree and three (3) years' of experience as a coder, or 10 years equivalent experience as a coding trainer, auditor, or full-time coding expert. Ten (10) years' full-time experience with inpatient and outpatient administrative ICD-10 coding, with at least three (3) years' of coding as a primary responsibility. Two (2) years' experience as an ICD-10 coding trainer (preferred). Extensive experience with SNOMED-CT, preferred. Experience with electronic health records and terminology, health care processes and the data flow of the delivery of care.

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION
Possesses or has the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
Current coding certification - AHIMA CCS
RHIA or RHIT credentials or equivalent, preferred

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
Strong knowledge in reviewing and interacting with an electronic health record
Knowledge of administrative code sets, particularly ICD-10-CM; the relationship between SNOMED CT and ICD-10-CM in National Library of Medicine (NLM) mapping files; and general awareness of CPT, HCPCS, DSM-5 and LOINC
Ability to identify and articulate principles that underlie current and emerging ICD10-CM coding rules and best practices for various coding situations. Will need to recommend and rationalize the handling of various complex situations in light of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system
Ability and willingness to learn the functions of the EHR system that interacts with automated SNOMED-to-ICD10-CM coding rules. Willingness to test new editions of deployed rules
Attention to detail and precision, with a high value on quality

Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
Exhibit professionalism at all times with client and team members
Skilled proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office programs, especially Excel (i.e., Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

Solid organizational skills relevant to carrying out day-to-day responsibilities
Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment under tight deadlines

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals pertinent to area of expertise, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals as needed. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients and other customers.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
