ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates as an active member of the care team, interacting in a manner that embraces the success of the team and provides quality care delivery.
  • Patient Observation
    o Periodically checks patients, takes vital signs, and observes condition of the patient and patient care equipment or devices.
    o Responds appropriate based on established policies and protocols.
    o Reports observations to the RN.
  • Patient Care Management and Intervention
    o Maintains patient safety.
    o Provides personal care for patient including hygiene and physical comfort measures.
    o Assists/feeds patients.
    o Answers call lights promptly.
    o Takes and records vital signs.
    o Turns, moves lifts, ambulates and transports patient by wheelchair, stretcher or bed as needed within the hospital or for discharge.
    o Sets up and dismantles patient care equipment.
    o Provides post mortem care.
  • Communication and Documentation
    o Communicates and collaborates with other healthcare providers to assure comprehensive care.
    o Reviews charts and clarifies orders with RN.
    o Documents care provided according to skill level and established guidelines.
    o Provides prompt notification to appropriate team member of changes in patient condition or response.
    o Answers phones and appropriate routes/deals with the caller's needs.
  • Reinforcement of Patient Family Education
    o Reinforces psychomotor skills that have been taught by the RN.
     Example: Observation of patient performing finger stick for testing of blood sugar.
    o Provides clarification of procedures explained by other team members.
     E.g. RN, Respiratory Therapist, Physical Therapist, etc.
  • Procedures and Treatments
    o Prepares patients for procedures and diagnostic treatments, performing those skills and competencies for which he/she has been trained and deemed competent.
    o Performs treatments and procedures according to service/unit specific skills list.
    o Applies restraints when directed by the nurse or physician and observes restrained patients according to policy.
    o Assists physicians and RNs with treatments as appropriate for skills.
    o Responds to a code on assigned floor aiding as requested by the registered nurse, including chest compressions when needed.
    o Empties medication from the tube system and appropriately gives it to nurse or places in medication room*. Completes MyLearning Module on Medication Safety/Security.

  • Environmental Management
    o Prepares rooms for new admissions by checking cleanliness, new patient packets, equipment properly functioning, etc.
    o Activates TV and replaces telephones for patients.
    o Passes water and linen.
    o Pulls trash, empties linen bags, regularly checks needle boxes and changes when necessary.
    o Cleans up spills and accidents.
    o Makes rounds at regular intervals to assure rooms are neat and tidy with clear access to supplies, equipment, phones, etc., and free from safety hazards.
    o Makes unoccupied patient beds, strips linen and removes discharged patient equipment, and prepares rooms after discharge when needed.
  • Materials Management
    o Orders supplies and maintains inventory according to par levels.
    o Obtains patient supplies for treatment and procedures.
    o Cleans machines and equipment and monitors storage and accessibility
    o Maintains order cleanliness of supply room; conducts inventory of supplies as assigned and assures that outdated items are properly discarded; assures the inventory items are properly marked for accurate charging.
  • Quality Improvement/Quality Control
    o Complies with regulatory requirements.
    o Participates in continuous quality improvement.
    o Maintains knowledge of and adheres to the hospital mission, vision, and values.
