Role Summary

The Client Value team helps the firm improve overall profit margins and increase client value through delivery of information, tools, project management, process improvement and other methods. Its goal is to increase value to the Firm's clients by providing lawyers with simple access to firm-wide information, experience, and data, enabling lawyers to work more efficiently, and ensuring quality and consistency of work product. The Client Value Lawyer uses their legal background, skills, and expertise to advance these goals in the context of the practice group to which they are assigned.

Finance Group Americas (FGAM) has been involved in many of the largest and most complex financing transactions in the Americas and worldwide, and consistently ranks at the top of various bank finance league tables. FGAM team members structure, negotiate and document financings for leading global commercial & investment banks, direct lenders, private equity sponsors and corporate borrowers.

The Client Value Lawyer, FGAM, will be an experienced finance lawyer, qualified in the U.S., who will help to develop, implement, and maintain the client value strategy for FGAM. The position reports directly to the Director, Client Value Lawyer Finance Group (Director), and will work closely with FGAM practice group leadership, FGAM partners & lawyers, the firm's Chief Knowledge & Client Value Officer, the Client Value team, the FGAM Senior Business Analyst (Business Analyst), and FGAM legal assistants and business development professionals to execute relevant initiatives. The Client Value Lawyer, FGAM, will play an instrumental role in helping FGAM lawyers operate more effectively and efficiently, thereby contributing to FGAM's ability to continue to foster and grow relationships with both new and existing clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with FGAM lawyers and Director, to identify and support execution of strategic priorities of FGAM practice, including in the areas of knowledge management (KM), business development, talent and culture, legal tech and innovation, lawyer training and development, thought leadership, and deal team support.
  • Provide legal and practical expertise, advice, and guidance for FGAM team members & clients, including analysis of legal content, development, and management of FGAM's collection of legal precedents and research materials, identification and analysis of changes in applicable laws and regulations, as well as market terms, trends and industry practices.
  • Implement procedures for capturing, filtering, storing, analyzing, accessing, and disseminating materials and information, and overseeing compliance with internal document management rules, ensuring seamless accessibility of information and precedents.
  • Coordinate with FGAM lawyers and clients, the LSTA and other providers, as well as the Business Analyst, to ensure that all models, forms, and client instructions are updated to reflect changes in applicable laws, regulations, market standards and best practices.
  • Perform ongoing analysis and support to identify and prioritize FGAM needs, develop solution strategies, execute positive change, and foster team morale.
  • Develop, draft, maintain, update, and collect knowledge resources, including internal checklists, protocols, newsletters, legal updates, alerts, memos, and other best practice materials to enhance the efficiency of the FGAM practice.
  • In collaboration with the Business Analyst and Director, develop, maintain, and enhance the FGAM team intranet site ( myShearman ) and support and oversee the profiling of historical FGAM matters for business development, marketing, and other analytical use, including the tracking of sponsor-backed "tree" processes and the organization, maintenance, and review of the centralized database for accessing this information.
  • Respond to ad-hoc deal team requests for support on active FGAM transactions and serve as a resource and coach for associates with questions, including on drafting assignments, deal processes, and research projects etc.
  • Provide consulting on KM concepts and methodologies.
  • Collaborate on strategy and execution for internal and external training and continuing legal education (CLE), including the development of a diverse curriculum of high value programs, assistance with preparation and enhancement of training materials & presentations, and the scheduling of training initiatives.
  • Act as a liaison connection between FGAM and the Client Value team, Business Development, the Finance department, and other business services units to spearhead improvement projects and ensure streamlined communications.
  • Work closely with other PSLs, KMAs and Client Value Lawyers to share best practices and coordinate efforts.
  • Attend and participate in internal meetings and conference calls related to FGAM and the Client Value team (LPM, KM, Research, Conflicts, Legal Tech, etc.).
  • Attend internal and external webinars/conferences to increase awareness of latest technology, KM best practices and finance industry developments.
  • Participate in testing, assessment, acquisition, implementation, training and building awareness around new research and legal tech tools, resources, and subscriptions designed to elevate FGAM lawyer efficiency.
  • Assist FGAM lawyers in speaking and publishing regularly on FGAM topics.
  • Play a key role in the development of FGAM's summer associate program.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Strong understanding of legal processes, including finance transaction management, and the ability to define solutions to support and improve such processes.
  • Proven capacity for creative problem solving.
  • Prior experience providing knowledge management support a plus, but not essential.
  • Well-developed organizational, drafting and research skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both in writing and speaking.
  • Desire to play a leadership role in developing and promoting this inaugural role with the FGAM team.
  • Familiarity with PowerPoint and a willingness to be creative in preparing presentations and pitch materials, designing events and programs etc.


Education & Experience
  • Juris doctor degree or the foreign equivalent.
  • Must be admitted to a state bar in the United States.
  • 5+ years of finance experience at a large law firm or relevant in-house legal department, although exceptional candidates with 3+ years of finance experience will also be considered.
  • Leveraged/acquisition finance experience is a plus.

  • Ability to work outside standard business hours on occasion is needed.
