Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) seeks an energetic, creative, and visionary leader for the position of Chief Development Officer (CDO) working closely with and reporting directly to Dean Paula Termuhlen, MD. The CDO will provide vision and leadership to achieve philanthropic goals and to create a comprehensive and cohesive development and alumni affairs operation for the school. The CDO will be responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing all fundraising programs and developing engagement programs to increase alumni relationships. This can be a hybrid role with options for in-office and remote work.

The ideal candidate for CDO will possess a record of leadership and accomplishment in the field of development and will have a proven record of accomplishment for fundraising success, especially with campaign planning and major gift solicitations. This individual must be an affable, tenacious, fiscally prudent, forward-thinking, results-oriented development expert.

The CDO will have an exemplary background of demonstrated success in building relationships as well as leading a modern, complex development effort. Other essential qualities include exemplary interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, personal integrity, personal accountability, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. It will be important that this leader be a strategic thinker who can develop and execute the plan, as well as the ability to build positive rapport and work effectively with a diverse and wide range of constituencies. The successful candidate should have a proven track-record in fundraising and comprehensive knowledge of all major development functions, including the ability to solicit and close major gifts.

This position requires the ideal candidate to perform these essential duties:

  • Provides visionary leadership and strategic oversight of the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs programs, policies, and processes.
  • Forges new relationships to build the medical school's visibility, impact, and financial resources.
  • Ensures dynamic processes in all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Designs and implements a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and other philanthropic support.
  • Develops and implements long- and short-term strategies to secure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations through major, planned, and annual gifts.
  • Establishes measurable goals to increase fundraising results that are both aspirational and in alignment with medical school goals.
  • Directs the planning for major gift functions and donor recognition.
  • Collaborates with the Western Michigan University Foundation to build relationships and identify fundraising opportunities that are mutually beneficial.
  • Hires and leads the fundraising team; fulfills all supervisory duties.
  • Develops strong, positive relationships with the medical school community.
  • Establishes and adheres to annual operating budgets and ensures that Development and Alumni Affairs programs are operating in a fiscally prudent and productive way.
  • Keeps abreast of current best practices in the Development profession and evaluates new and emerging ideas for potential implementation at the medical school.
  • Oversees the development of engagement programs focused on increasing the depth and diversity of the alumni relationships within the medical school.
  • Works with recent medical student and residency graduates to build life-long relationships and connect them with established members of the alumni community.
  • Availability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel on a frequent basis.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, development, or a related field is required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 10 years or more of relevant development experience in a medical school, higher education, or healthcare setting is required with a minimum of five years managing staff.
  • A record of leadership and accomplishments in the field of development, especially with campaign planning and major gift solicitations.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and engagement skills.
  • Must be an affable, tenacious, fiscally prudent, forward-thinking, results-oriented, development expert.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial reports, working with various technologies including advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office suite, mass email applications, database and project management software, and CRM systems.


  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), Certified Fundraising Management (CFRM) or Certified Fundraising Leadership (CFRL) preferred.

Remote work:

  • Flexible work solutions allow for remote work within the state of Michigan. A hybrid schedule of remote and on-site work will be required for this position.

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.
