GENERAL OVERVIEW
The Chief CRNA is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the BWH CRNA Program including the SRNA Program. The Chief CRNA collaborates with Chief of Anesthesiology and Clinical Director and senior department management to maintain the goal of overseeing student education, CRNA staff education and overseeing the provision of all aspects of clinical care pertaining to the CRNA Group. She/he is directly responsible to Chief, Anesthesiology and the Clinical Director, Anesthesiology.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Education Program
- Oversee clinical training program for SRNA's, including, but not limited to: monthly scheduling, evaluations, didactic teaching, hospital orientation, hospital onboarding and credentialing
- Participates with Northeastern University, Boston College, and University of New England SRNA programs in the following: applicant interviews, summer simulation sessions, bi-annual strategic meetings, annual job fairs
- Oversees the Assistant SRNA Program Director and is responsible for all aspects of the SRNA Program.
Patient Care
- Collaborates in the development of philosophy, goals, objectives and programming for the CRNA practice.
- Develops and implements a practice which provides effective and efficient patient focused care to all patients.
- Performs all clinical responsibilities of a Staff CRNA.
Standards of Care
- Implements standards for nurse anesthesia care/management that facilitate high quality care as set forth by BWH and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).
- Develops, implements and monitors quality assurance and peer review programs.
- Assures group adherence to competency criteria and continued education requirements set forth by AANA.
- Oversees the updating of policies/procedures relevant to Nurse Anesthetist practice at BWH.
Coordination
- Represents CRNA's with the Anesthesiology leadership team (RN, MD, and Administrator) and works collaboratively to meet the goals of the Department of Anesthesiology and Nursing.
- Collaborates with clinical faculty and clinical area staff in providing and evaluating teaching activities.
- Acts as the Program Manager for all affiliated SRNA and CRNA education programs (Northeastern, BC, UNE, etc.)
- Participates in and provides leadership to appropriate BWH committees.
Management
- Develops, reviews and revises educational and clinical guidelines as appropriate.
- Recruits, hires, evaluates and supervises practice of nurse anesthetists in compliance with BWH employee policy. Assumes primary responsibility for disciplinary action of staff members in conjunction with the Medical Director, as indicated by the BWH evaluation process.
- Meets regularly with SRNA and CRNA staff to inform them of important issues and trends.
- Plans orientation program for new SRNA's and CRNA's; and oversees their performance during the probationary period.
- Reviews CRNA responsibilities, job expectations, and job satisfaction and works with individual CRNA's to meet career goals.
- Promotes and encourages professional staff development.
- Maintains a clinical practice as a CRNA in the BWH CRNA practice.
- Establishes and promotes goals of CRNA practice.
Budgeting
- Plans and develops budget for CRNA practice and SRNA education in conjunction with Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Clinical Director and Executive Director of Department.
- Monitors budget allocation and resources available.
Qualifications QUALIFICATIONSEducation
Graduate of an accredited program for CRNAs. Master's in Nursing or related field, Bachelor of Science in Nursing required, Doctorate (DNP, DNAP, PhD) highly preferred.
Licensure
Current Massachusetts license as RN with authorization to practice in expanded role of CRNA.
Certification
National certification with NBCRNA.
Experience
Minimum 3-years practice in all aspects of Anesthesia Nursing including experience in a teaching hospital as faculty and/or clinical preceptor.
Demonstrated leadership/managerial capabilities in CRNA practice.
Experience in management/development of educational program for SRNAs preferred.
