The Manager, Safety (Chemical Hygienist) provides subject matter knowledge and expertise in the management of safety programs within the University of Miami Environmental Health and Safety Department. Ensures that the University's activities follow all federal, state, and local regulations. Additionally, the Manager, Safety (Chemical Hygienist) provides emergency response support for activities requiring safety expertise.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Develops, administers, and interprets programs and policies for safety, compliance, and injury and illness prevention.
  • Contributes to campus activities as a safety officer.
  • Performs safety related functions such as chemical safety, radiation safety, occupational safety, fire prevention, physical safety or environmental protection.
  • Identifies potential safety and health hazards and discrepancies with University of Miami policies and programs, regulatory agency standards, and national guidelines.
  • Develops and implements strategies, policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Innovates, develops and coordinates corrective actions, control measures and solutions to align with best practices and current regulations.
  • Prepares and submits written reports for documenting identification of potential hazards(s) and/or program discrepancies.
  • Manages systemic safety administration programs, including documentation, program development and safety training.
  • Contributes safety reports and activity reports to safety committees and advisory groups.
  • Develops and delivers safety training to University faculty, staff, and students per regulatory requirements and as needed.
  • Advises on safe work practices and potential hazards.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Participates in or leads in the conduct of accident/incident investigations.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and conferences to remain up to date with emergency safety, health and environmental issues and regulations.
  • Participates in facility renovation and construction activity reviews to identify safety concerns and provide recommendations for safe environments.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • The position is designated as an Essential Employee Tier 1. Sustains work activities and participates in emergency response activities for the safety of the University occupants and protection of University assets, even when the University is declared to be on restricted access or closed due to emergency conditions as defined by the University of Miami.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant field

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e., Microsoft Office)

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions
  • Acts as the designated Chemical Hygiene Officer for the University of Miami.
  • Assists in questions regarding the purchase or use of chemicals, including, but not limited to handling, importing, permitting.
  • Coordinates with relevant University representatives and committees for compliance, safe purchase, monitoring and storage.
  • Responds to inquires, requests, complaints involving chemicals for faculty, staff and students.
  • Participates in and helps manage emergency response actions involving chemicals.
  • Manages the University's chemical inventory and communication program, including documentation, program development and safety training.
  • Reviews and interprets safety data sheets. Ensures safety signage and labeling is accurate.
  • Participates in laboratory safety inspections and supports lab safety functions through chemical handling and process management.

Department Specific Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in relevant field, such as basic or applied science, engineering, safety, industrial hygiene, or health physics; Master's degree preferred.

Certification and Licensing:

Preferred Board Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in occupational safety, fire safety, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, biological safety, and/or environmental safety or equivalent.
