Chair, Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science

The University of Delaware (UD) invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science. We seek a leader who values a multidisciplinary approach to the study of language and the mind. The Chair will lead the department to further ties across the University and to advance its scholarly reputation and visibility. The Chair will provide academic and administrative leadership, manage and secure resources for the Department, promote excellence in research and teaching, and foster a collegial and inclusive atmosphere that supports the Department's mission and vision.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an area appropriate to Linguistics or Cognitive Science, and will have a distinguished record of scholarship. We especially welcome applicants who have a broad understanding of linguistics, speech and hearing sciences, and cognitive science and conduct research with strong interdisciplinary connections. We desire candidates who have leadership experience working with faculty, staff, and administration and who will foster diversity, equity, inclusion and provide a vision for ways to continue to strengthen our department's efforts in these areas.

The incoming Chair will help support and grow the full-time and supplemental faculty who teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and who conduct interdisciplinary research on a wide array of topics including the connections between language and vision in the mind, psycholinguistics and the cognitive neuroscience of language, phonology and phonetics, syntax and semantics, and speech language pathology. The Department has a strong interdisciplinary profile and promotes active engagement with other departments and programs across campus. LINGUISTICS & COGNITIVE SCIENCE AT UD: The Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware is within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department has a renowned history in scholarship and teaching and is committed to involving students in original, innovative research and preparing students for a range of careers. The Department offers a Ph.D. in Linguistics, M.A. in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, B.S. in Cognitive Science, and a combined B.S./B.A and M.A. option (enabling students to earn both degrees in a 5-year period). The Department also offers a Certificate in Cognitive Science, which serves as a catalyst to inspire graduate students to engage in cross-departmental interdisciplinary research.

A strong and growing interdepartmental network of cognitive scientists and neuroscientists is also represented in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. A new Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Program provides opportunities to train interdisciplinary scholars and build connections with researchers across departments and colleges. Enhanced by state-of-the-art facilities, research at UD is conducted across all seven colleges and numerous interdisciplinary institutes and centers. Relevant staffed facilities on campus include the new 11,600 square foot Center for Biomedical and Brain Imaging (CBBI, http://cbbi.udel.edu) housing a 3T Siemens Magnetom Prisma for humans and a 9.4T/20cm Bruker MRI for small animals, an animal housing and research facility attached to the CBBI, a 103,000 square foot Health Sciences Complex, a 194,000 square foot Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory, and the Delaware Technology Park, where entrepreneurial and academic research labs are co-located. The Early Learning Center at UD is a daycare and preschool that supports the academic and research programs of the University as a site for student observation and practicum as well as faculty and graduate student research. The NIH-supported Delaware Center for Neuroscience Research in collaboration with Delaware State University, and the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA), a partnership among the University of Delaware, Christiana Care Health System, Nemours/Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children, and Thomas Jefferson University, provide infrastructure and opportunity for innovative basic, clinical and translational collaborations.

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware offers exceptional educational experiences including integrated instruction, research and public engagement.
