Program Summary: The NEXT program provides case management, training, and support to youth and adults 16-24 years of age. Job readiness and work experience are a pivotal part of the program. The youth programs rely heavily on good relationships with community employers, both public and private. Youth in the program are aged 16-24 no longer attending school who have barriers to employment. This program supports young adults with vocational and life skills training as well as paid work experience opportunities. The programs strive to prepare and assist targeted low-income youth for educational attainment and for jobs that lead towards career development. This program is funded by Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Title I Young Adult Services and awarded by Workforce Southwest Washington (WSW).

Position Summary: The Business Development Specialist will work with the case management staff to provide post-secondary education and in-demand job training, in addition to providing educational and resource navigation support to participants. The right candidate will meet with employers and other stakeholders in the community to assess needs and create opportunities including paid work experiences, training, job shadows and employment opportunities.

Salary: $19.00 - $22.00 Per Hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Business Development Specialist responsibilities Includes the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Initiate and maintain personal contacts with employers to develop job and internship opportunities, outreach, recruitment, and positive public relations.
  • Network with and maintain a positive relationship with WSW, WIOA providers and Host Agency partners to identify training and employment opportunities.
  • Cultivate positive, professional relationships with school staff, intervention specialists, truancy and juvenile justice staff, and students, as well as employers and community partners
  • Work with Youth Team and Youth Consortium Partners to support effective service delivery to the region’s caseload.
  • Ensure existing and potential internship host sites are eligible, appropriate, and approved for participants.
  • Collaborate with Case Managers, Instructors, and participants to set up and conduct workshops and classes related to resume writing, job searching, interviewing techniques and procedures, mock interviews, problem solving, goal setting, and other vocational offerings.
  • Collaborate with Talent Development Specialist to recruit and determine participant eligibility and maintain accurate case files in ETO and Caseworthy to track work experiences.
  • Assess participant employment and training needs, determine employment goals and objectives, and assist participants in the development of an Individualized Service Plan.
  • Inform participants of community resources and facilitate appropriate connections with community resource agencies and advocate on behalf of the participant.
  • Provide bimonthly reports to Youth Program Manager in collaboration with the Youth Team.
  • Follow-up with participants regarding their job search and additional training /needs.
  • Use the Objective Assessment and Individualized Service Strategy, to determine and justify participant training and credential purchases.
  • Facilitate quarterly meetings with community partners and local businesses to engage and schedule speakers.
  • Remain knowledgeable of community, agency, and program information through inter-office communications, participation in professional development activities and other community events.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:
  • Associate’s Degree OR 3-5 years related experience
  • Demonstrate cultural competence; specifically, awareness, attitude, knowledge, willingness and skills to work effectively with a culturally and demographically diverse population
  • Exceptional analytical, judgment, decision-making and communications skills
  • Superior coaching, leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build understanding and concensus
Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws; No direct reports for this position.

Cultural Competency: Ability to work in a diverse organization. Ability to work on a team and willingness to roll up one’s sleeves to get the job done.

Language Skills: Ability to write creatively and articulately with an emphasis on tact and diplomacy. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and average. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra when working on spreadsheets. Ability to create and manage departmental budget.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge Microsoft Office products, specifically Word and Excel and PowerPoint.

Other Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive understanding of all aspects of a Business Development Specialist.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Washington State Driver’s License required

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear and type. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
