Summary :
The Biller lab at Wellesley College invites applications for a bioinformatics research associate who will contribute to our work in the area of marine microbial ecology and evolution. We are seeking someone to assist with the analysis of large-scale genomic, metagenomic, and transcriptomic datasets collected both within our lab and as part of multi-institutional collaborations. The bioinformatician will play a critical role in advancing a variety of ongoing projects in the lab, provide general computing assistance to other group members, and will have the opportunity to pursue original research projects. While the position is primarily focused on data analysis, opportunities to participate in laboratory or field research efforts may be available as time and interest allows. The position has potential for flexible work schedules and location.

The lab is committed to providing strong mentorship, training, and career advancement support. This position includes a competitive salary, benefits package, and travel opportunities. Wellesley College is located ~30 minutes from downtown Boston and ~90 minutes from Woods Hole, and the research associate will have the opportunity to engage with the local research community as well as collaborators across the country.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analysis of large-scale bioinformatic data sets (genomes, metagenomes, transcriptomes, etc)
  • Development, validation, maintenance and documentation of analytical pipelines
  • Documents and visualizes results
  • Data management and organization
  • Assisting students in the lab
Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum B.A./B.S. or equivalent in biology, bioinformatics, or related field required
Skills and Abilities:
  • Required : Experience working in a Linux/UNIX environment; profiency in programming/data analysis using languages such as R and/or Python; strong written and oral communication abilities; attention to detail, commitment to maintaining proper documentation, and good organization skills; scientific curiosity; ability to work independently within a collaborative environment
  • Preferred: Demonstrated experience analyzing large DNA sequencing datasets; familiarity with common genomic/metagenomic analysis software and approaches; ability to rapidly learn new fields of study.

  • This position is critical for advancing the scientific research program of Prof. Steven Biller in the Biology department
