Claremont McKenna College seeks a skilled storyteller and savvy marketing and communications professional to coordinate and cultivate the Office of Admission and Financial Aid's creative strategy for print and digital, with specific focus on social media, web, and email. Reporting to the Director of Publications and Strategic Initiatives, this position will serve as the primary liaison for marketing and communication efforts between the Office of Public Affairs and Communication and the Office of Admission and Financial Aid.

The Associate Director of Admission Marketing and Communication will combine nimble, high-impact editorial execution and visual dynamism with distinctive brand awareness for a selective, diverse, and evolving undergraduate market. This position is responsible for developing creative and informational content across channels with multiple audiences, and will serve as the lead for a bold, new web and digital admission strategy to support the College in its outreach and recruitment efforts. Candidates must have a passion for student engagement and an eye for combining personal narratives with mission-driven messaging for higher education.



Admission and Financial Aid Functions (80%)

  • Dedicated to serve as the primary writer, marketer and CMC brand enforcer for Admission and Financial Aid

  • Oversee and coordinate all print, web, and email marketing and communication channels in support of recruitment initiatives and goals

  • Develop a dynamic website strategy for the Office of Admission and Financial Aid, which results in a stronger brand and presence

  • Utilizing knowledge of prospective student metrics, manage, create, and maintain a multi-channel segmented and targeted communications strategy, with web and social media at the core and bolstered by print collateral such as brochures, postcards, promotional and event flyers, and informational office handouts

  • Under the guidance of the Associate Vice President for Admission and Financial aid, lead the Admission and Financial Aid operations staff in the design and implementation of integrated marketing efforts, including informational and recruitment-based emails and announcements, which promote the overall CMC brand.

  • Regularly attend meetings with both Admission and Financial Aid and Public Affairs and Communication staffs to learn about processes and opportunities for collaboration; direct and oversee separate meetings for relevant updates including members of both staffs.

  • Implement, review and enforce CMC branding and messaging standards, while meeting the overall goals of recruiting students, in all web, print and other Admission and Financial Aid communications.

  • Determine the prioritization of projects, including need for third-party vendors.

  • Oversee all design and video projects for Admission and Financial Aid.

  • Analyze trends and data to determine best practices and strategic application of targeted messaging across communications channels with a specific focus on prospective applicants and families.

  • Analyze and review effectiveness of strategic efforts on an ongoing basis with Admission and Financial Aid and compare to macro-data collected by Public Affairs and Communication teams to determine opportunities, gaps and necessary changes.

  • Work with Admission operation staff to learn about specific office tools like Slate to advance recruitment and engagement.

  • Monitor and update Admission web pages and Slate, as needed, with new content.

  • Attend and participate in admission-based events, including campus tours and off-campus outreach efforts, as needed.

CMC Public Affairs and Communications Functions (20%)

  • Identify, research, and write student, faculty, and campus life stories for dissemination through the web, print, email, and social media; work across and make connections within multiple campus departments to ensure representation and diversity of voice and student experiences.

  • Collaborate with Public Affairs staff, including photographer/videographer, and Office of Admission student social media team on marketing video projects.

  • Represent Admission and Financial Aid needs and projects in weekly Public Affairs and Communications meetings.

  • Coordinate communication synergies and editorial partnerships between Associate Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid and Director of Publications and Strategic Initiatives.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communication, Journalism, Information Technology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 5 years of relevant communications experience in higher education marketing, journalism, or related fields with increasing responsibility is required.

Experience with higher education processes, specifically in the admission space, and liberal arts colleges is highly desired. Experience with print, web, and email marketing and communication channels.

LICENSES: A valid driver's license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events is required.

A valid driver's license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College's authorized driver's policy.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

  • Deploy professional skills in communications management, including strong writing, editing, and proofreading, to best promote the College's strategic interests.

  • Must be able to understand and effectively communicate the culture, mission, and history of the College's liberal arts environment.

  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills.

  • Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.

  • Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software. Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality. Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College's strategic vision and the division's/department's annual goals.

  • Knowledge of print and social media, graphic design and video production.

  • Strong analytical skills. Ability to analyze and review effectiveness of strategic initiatives, perform gap analysis and make any recommendations for change.

  • Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to effectively complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail in fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work holiday, weekend, and evening hours.


HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary and exceed 40 hours per week, due to needs of the College or division. This is a 12 month position.

A CSA is a key partner in helping the College comply with the requirements of the federal Clery Act, the goal of which is to provide information about safety and crimes on campus. Because crimes are often reported to employees who are not law enforcement or campus safety officers, the Clery Act obligates the College to identify who on our campus is likely to receive such reports and inform them of this role and responsibility and train them on what to do with that information. As a result of this designation, upon hire, and periodically thereafter, you are required to take the Clery Act training course.
