Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Major Gifts, the Assistant Vice President will be responsible for designing and implementing major gifts strategies to increase philanthropic support across the Brigham, with a focus on the Heart and Vascular Center which includes the Divisions of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, as well as Vascular Medicine and Vascular Surgery. Additional oversight of fundraising for the Department of Pediatric and Newborn Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Assistant Vice President will lead a team of 3-4 fundraisers, a scientific writer, and will be supported by a shared Development Associate.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts in the six and seven-figure range or more, preferably in the field of academic medicine.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant Vice President will be responsible for developing a strategy and leading the execution of a program that will generate a minimum of $10 million in revenue on an annual basis.

Working closely with Department Chairs, Division Chiefs, and some of the most authoritative physician-scientists in the world, the Assistant Vice President is responsible for identifying and engaging individual major and principal donors for assigned areas.

The Assistant Vice President will develop and implement strategies to secure gifts that will support the groundbreaking work of BWH and be compliant with patient confidentiality requirements. It is expected that the successful candidate will have the communications skills to develop strong working relationships with assigned physicians, scientists and hospital leadership and will be able to balance their expectations with donors and prospects.

The Assistant Vice President will be responsible for designing operational plans and annual objectives for members of the team. They will meet agreed upon revenue targets, performance metrics and standards. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing and reporting on activity related to assigned areas as requested by the Associate Vice President for Major Gifts.

The Assistant Vice President will direct the activities and communications associated with two volunteer advisory boards, including the Heart and Vascular and Newborn Medicine advisory boards.

The Assistant Vice President will ensure accurate reporting of all relevant contact information and information related to the prospect/donor's engagement in the hospital's CRM known as Atlas, providing updated information to colleagues and for future engagement strategies.

In addition, the AVP will collaborate with colleagues across teams (e.g., Corporate and Foundation Giving, Gift Planning, Annual Giving, etc.) to achieve program and fundraising goals, and they will be encouraged to actively participate in appropriate prospect review and campaign meetings.

As a member of the senior management team, the Assistant Vice President will set an example of professionalism and will lead with integrity. They will participate in senior management meetings and activities and assume significant responsibility toward achieving the Major Gifts revenue goals.

Occasional travel and/or evening and/or weekend work is also required.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of experience in development. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in major or principal gifts in an academic medical setting or within a healthcare organization strongly preferred.
  • Consistent track record as an effective manager in an academic teaching hospital, university, or other large organization.
  • The position requires a self-starter, able to work with and empower others, including prospective donors and their advisors, volunteers, and development staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the field of professional development.
  • Must possess advanced knowledge/skills with the Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database software and scheduling/organizing software; and must have outstanding customer services skills. CRM or equivalent experience is preferred.

  • Outstanding organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail required.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in and capacity for thorough, science-based content.
  • Ability to build a program by traditional as well as entrepreneurial means.
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, collaborative work style with colleagues in the development office and across the hospital essential.
  • Ability to think conceptually as well as analytically in a fast-paced, complex environment. Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Must be able to listen actively as well as to influence and persuade others.
