The Social Work Program at Barton College invites applicants for a tenure-track, nine-month, academic appointment at the Assistant Professor rank beginning August 2021.

The successful candidate will teach across the social work curriculum and serve as the field education director of the Social Work program. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all components of field education for the Bachelor of Social Work program. The Field Director recruits, manages, and supports all field placements, field instructors, and faculty liaisons; provides orientation and training to students, field instructors, and faculty liaisons; and maintains all partnership agreements with field agencies. Other responsibilities include advising students and participating in departmental, college, and professional service. While the ability to maintain a program of scholarly activities and to mentor students in those activities is important, priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate students.

Responsibilities

Assistant professor responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching an initial 3/3 course load which may include online and evening teaching
  • Developing syllabi reflective of CSWE core competencies and practice behaviors
  • Developing appropriate student learning outcomes reflective of the CSWE core competencies
  • Providing academic benchmark assessments for annual reports
  • Serving as academic advisor to social work majors and as advisor to the student organization
  • Serving on departmental and college committees

Field director responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the Director in the preparation of accreditation reaffirmation documents
  • Establishing, enhancing, and expanding placement sites to ensure that agencies meet the Council on Social Work Education requirements and that the organization's mission and philosophy are consistent with the mission and purpose of Barton College's social work program
  • Developing and enhancing community partnerships
  • Overseeing, organizing, and implementing the orientation, training, evaluation of, and support to field instructors
  • Orienting, supporting, and training faculty field liaisons
  • Providing ongoing, timely support to faculty field liaisons as field challenges emerge
  • Educating and training faculty field liaisons around instructing field seminar courses and the importance of being able to support the social work program as the signature pedagogy
  • Orienting and preparing social work students to enter the field
  • Maintaining the ongoing evaluation and enhancement of the Field Instructor and Student Field Education Manual in electronic and hard copy formats
Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Social Work offices share communal space with two other disciplines. Professional collegiality is expected.

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience

Minimum qualifications:

  • MSW from an accredited social work program
  • Two years post-MSW experience
  • Ability to teach across the social work curriculum
  • Ability to teach general education courses, such as Introduction to Sociology
  • Ability to effectively teach online courses
  • Ability to effectively advise students
  • Proficiency in database, word processing, spreadsheet software, and electronic communication
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required with ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels within and without the organization
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to effectively work independent of direct supervision
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and ability to be detail-oriented

Preferred qualifications:

  • Field education experience at the undergraduate level
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level
  • Teaching experience with distance education technology
  • Experience with social work field education
  • An earned doctorate or ABD in social work or related field
