Description:

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-line faculty position in structural geology. The successful applicant will be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of August 1st, 2024. Candidates with research specializations including but not limited to rock and/or fracture mechanics, tectonics, planetary structure and tectonics, active tectonics, faulting, and geomechanics are encouraged to apply. Candidates utilizing experimental, field-based, observational, and/or computational approaches in their research will be considered. The successful applicant will develop a vigorous, externally funded research program in structural geology that includes supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching responsibilities will include developing engaging introductory courses, the core major-level course in Structure, and graduate courses in their specialization that incorporate field experiences. The successful applicant will be expected to perform rank-appropriate departmental and university service.  

Knoxville is in the foothills of the Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains, outstanding natural teaching laboratories and recreation destinations. In addition to mountains, East Tennessee has abundant inland waterways and pristine state and national parks. Knoxville is a thriving city filled with indoor and outdoor entertainment venues, restaurants, shops, and cultural offerings. The city has a blend of convenient urban and rural living settings.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. at the time of the appointment. Applications from candidates who will complete their Ph.D. by the appointment date will be considered. Candidates must show the potential for excellence in research through publication and/or competitive support (e.g., grants, fellowships), and a record of or demonstration of potential for excellence in teaching. We seek to hire a structural geologist who complements existing strengths of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences including (but not limited to) igneous and experimental petrology, trace element and isotope geochemistry, environmental science, and planetary geoscience.
