The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks candidates for a tenure-track faculty position with expertise in early childhood education and care and child development, or a closely related field (such as human development, child development, psychology, family studies, education policy, etc.), to begin September 1, 2022.

We are seeking a collaborative and creative colleague who shares UMass Boston's commitment to urban populations and who possesses inclusionary, transdisciplinary, and/or global perspectives on early education and care. The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the development, growth, and enhancement of programs in the early childhood area, including a robust undergraduate program in Early Childhood Education and Care. Strong qualitative or quantitative methodological expertise is expected. In particular, we are seeking scholars working on the leading edge of Early Childhood Education and Care research, specifically in the areas of critical theory and research. Candidates must be committed to support our goal of ensuring an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace.

We are looking for individuals whose expertise aligns with one of the following hiring priorities:

  • Research or theory building on anti-racism and anti-bias in early childhood education and care from birth through age 8. Scholars who conduct research rooted in Critical Race Theory, Critical Language and Race Theory (LangCrit), Critical Disability Studies, and/or Gender Studies in Education.
  • Research on anti-bias teaching methods or curriculum development in science, math, engineering and/or the arts in diverse populations.
  • Research on social contexts and influences in early childhood education and care.
  • Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate evidence of high-quality teaching practice at the higher education level and the potential for obtaining external grant funding.     Responsibilities: carry out an active research agenda that makes significant contributions to the field of early childhood education; teach courses in the undergraduate, Master's, Post-Master's, and doctoral programs; provide research opportunities for student at all levels; supervise students in their pre-practicum and practicum settings (internships/student teaching); mentor undergraduate and graduate students; assist with curriculum development and assessment for professional associations' accreditation; obtain grant funding to support students at all levels; and contribute to the university's urban mission, to university/departmental committees, and to professional associations.

    Candidates must have a terminal degree in Early Childhood Education, Applied Child Development, Curriculum and Instruction, or closely related field (such as human development, psychology, family studies, education policy, etc.); in-field work experience, preferably in settings that embrace multicultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity; experience teaching at the college level, both traditional and nontraditional student populations; and evidence of scholarly productivity. Candidates should provide evidence of ability to seek and obtain extramural research funding.
