The Indiana University Center for Global Health Equity (Center) develops mutually beneficial partnerships across disciplines, schools, and countries to create and implement sustainable programs that improve health and human flourishing in underserved areas worldwide. Its flagship global health partnership is the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH), which represents a 30-year partnership with Moi University in Kenya and a consortium of academic partners in the US, Canada and Europe. As the lead of the AMPATH consortium, the Center provides strategic leadership, administrative and management support to AMPATH including its research program in Kenya and to new replication partnerships in Ghana, Mexico and Nepal.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as the administrative leader of the IU Center for Global Health Equity's research program and report to the Director of Research.
  • Under the Director of Research, leads the Center in its research operations and designing and implementing the Center's strategic plan for research.
  • Provides direction and leadership on strategic planning, program monitoring and evaluation, public relations, and oversees the financial, legal, business, communications and logistical operations for the Center's research programs.
  • Serves as co-Assistant Director for the AMPATH Kenya Research Program alongside their direct counterpart based at Moi University in Kenya.
  • Oversees (alongside their Kenyan counterpart and under the direction of the Co-Directors of Research at AMPATH) the logistical and administrative operations of the AMPATH Kenya research program and the research program office staff based at the Center.
  • Supports the Center's engagement in new research partnerships as part of AMPATH Global (with new partnerships in Ghana, Mexico and Nepal) and ongoing and new global health research partnerships across the broader university.
  • Works and collaborates with the Director of Research at the Center to develop a strategic and business plan for the Center's research programs and initiatives and ensure that goals, objectives, and budgets are being met.
  • Participates in leadership meetings with key stakeholders and program leadership.
  • Oversees research operations of the Center including logistical and daily operations, business and financial activities.
  • Supervises research program staff at the Center, including but not limited to 2 Program Managers, and a Program Coordinator. This includes analyzing, monitoring and evaluating performance of assigned staff, providing direct supervision and support to staff, and overseeing hiring and training of new program staff.
  • Develops, implements, and oversees systems for program performance tracking including tracking global health research awards, publications, trainees, and clinical impact on global health programs and ensuring regular program progress reporting requirements are met for the Center and AMPATH Kenya research programs.
  • Serves as the primary administrative lead for the AMPATH Global Research Replication Working Group that supports collaborative research programs in Ghana, Mexico and Nepal.
  • Serves as primary administrative liaison for the Center's research programs and key administrative units in the School of Medicine and the larger university including, but not limited to, Offices of Research Administration, Compliance, Financial Services, and General Counsel.
  • Serves as the research liaison for the Center and AMPATH Kenya with the Indiana Institute for Global Health, Inc.
  • Designs, implements, coordinates, and leads a comprehensive strategy to increase global health research engagement, infrastructure, and support for global health research core operations of the IU Center for Global Health Equity, AMPATH Kenya, and AMPATH Global across schools and departments at Indiana University.
  • Travels to research program sites a minimum of 2 times per year to expand global health research opportunities, strengthen operational support and infrastructure for research, and oversees successful research program operations and program implementation.
  • Stays up to date on institutional, regulatory and sponsor guidelines and policies related to global health research and the Center's research programs and ensure compliance.
  • Other activities as assigned by the Director of Research, IU Center for Global Health Equity.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day operational management of support staff.
  • Establishes short-term operational objectives.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
  • Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve user support operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in business, management or related field.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in public health, public administration, management or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of program management or related experience.
Preferred
  • 5 years of program management leadership or related experience.
  • Experience with strategic planning and program management, program evaluation, and grant writing and administration in public health or related field.
  • International experience working in low- to middle-income countries.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position requires a valid current passport and the ability to travel internationally, nationally, and locally.

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work). This is subject to change based on university policy and business needs.
