General Summary:

The Assistant Director will oversee three major areas of the University housing program: 1.) providing support for office technology and systems to support student success 2.) supporting the development and implementation of living learning communities; and 3.) supporting students of concern, including providing necessary referrals to students in need. This is a "live-off" position.

This position may be assigned formal on-call duties in accordance with Article 18.3 of the contract between the University and the Professional Staff Union. Assignment of on-call will be detailed using the "On-Call Assignment (Professional Staff) Form.

Examples of Duties:

  • Act as the primary Residence Life administrative user for the StarRez Housing Management System and Roompact System while developing on-going strategy and improvements that align with the goals of the organization;
  • Manage departmental website
  • Provide departmental assessment support, including activities, retention among students living in the residence halls, student and behavioral concerns;
  • Support the Director and Associate Director of Residential Education in the development of living-learning communities that link residential communities with academic colleges and develop academic success initiatives in the residence halls;
  • Identify industry best practices in themed housing communities and work to implement them as appropriate for the UMass Boston community;
  • Manage, update, track and oversee an in-house list of students of possible concern and provide follow-up to residential students, as needed, providing referrals, support, and regular check-ins;
  • Work closely with other staff, including student staff, in the Office of Student Housing, Office of the Dean of Students, the University Health Services Counseling Center, and Undergraduate Studies to assure information and follow-up procedures are shared and streamlined for possible students of concern;
  • Provide referrals, as needed, to offices, including but not limited to, Health and Wellness, Counseling, Interfaith, Public Safety, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Dean of Students;
  • Conduct preventative outreach to known students of concern, either past or present, throughout the academic year in conjunction with identified high stressed times of the academic year, including but not limited to, midterms, registration, and finals; provide timely and regular follow up to current and former students of concern;
  • Identify crisis prevention training needs for the department; develop training modules and facilitate training sessions for staff, including student staff;
  • Work closely with the Community Director(s) and Resident Assistants to identify and track students of concern;
  • Represent the department on the institutional CARE team;
  • Cultivate, manage and collaborate with community resources to connect residential students with possible resources, referrals, and programmatic needs;
  • Manage, track and update all reports in conjunction with students of concern as deemed necessary by the Director of Housing and Residence Life and the Associate Dean of Students;
  • Develop protocols for managing conflict resolution processes within the department that are consistent with institutional practices and legal requirements;
  • Mediate or facilitate conversations between conflicting parties in a way that preserves individual dignity, protects individual and community rights, and fosters learning and development;
  • Document outcome of conflict resolution as required by institutional practices or legal requirements; assess effectiveness of conflict resolution processes using outcomes-based methods;
  • Assist in the hiring and training of student staff, including Resident Assistants and Front Desk Associates;
  • Assist in University/Office Events such as Open Houses, Orientation, Welcome Day, residence hall openings/closings as needed;
  • Participate and engage in campus life events in the evenings and on weekends as needed;
  • Serve in the on-call administrator rotation along with the Associate Director, Assistant Director(s), and Director; serve as emergency responder and perform assignment tasks in case of housing emergencies (as deemed necessary by the Director);
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Counseling (preferred), Higher Education, Student Services, Student Affairs or a closely related field, and a minimum of three-five years of post-master's work experience in student and/or residence life, academic advising or a closely related field is required. Two (2) years of professional Residential Life experience is required. This position requires occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours, as well as availability of outside of regularly scheduled hours for emergency response. Due to the on-call nature of the position, the Assistant Director must live within 30-minutes of campus.

This is an exempt union position.
