Saybrook University Teaching Fellowship Selection Criteria

Selection Criteria: IFN students who have completed at least 50% of their IFN Core and Elective courses and have established expertise in the specific field. Preference given to applicants who are further along in the program. Selected by Chair and one other faculty member. A salaried faculty member will be placed in the course shell.

Saybrook University Teaching Fellowship Job Description

Under the direction of the Department Chair and mentoring faculty, the Teaching Fellow will teach the basic nutrition science course in Integrative and Functional Nutrition. The job will entail engaging students through discussion and assignments as outlined in the course syllabi, providing students with substantive feedback via one-on-one zoom meetings, grading feedback, and group zoom sessions, and respond to student questions and concerns in a timely manner. The Teaching Fellow will also maintain communication with Department Administration, Faculty, and Students.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Responsive and timely communication with Department Chair

• Present courses, workshops and/or course introductions

• Attend meetings (Faculty, Program, College, and University) and Faculty trainings, which could include Canvas, IRB, student record system, etc.

Mentoring Students

• Actively support the socialization of Students into the program and profession

• Support student course progress and retention

Instruction

• Deliver high quality innovative campus and/or on-line courses that foster critical thinking

• Ensure rigorous academic standards and quality aligned with program goals

• Stay in contact with the mentoring faculty about course progress

Governance

• Actively participate in degree and departmental meetings when appropriate

• Maintain effective professional and community involvement and/or affiliations as an ambassador for the University as needed

Faculty Engagement Expectations

All Faculty members at Saybrook University are expected to be available and responsive to students. Adjunct Faculty engagement expectations include:

• Adjunct Faculty will contact Students enrolled in their course within the first week of the new semester and prior to residential and educational conferences.

• At a minimum, Adjunct Faculty are expected to interact with students in their online course at least three (3) times per week. Note: Substantive Faculty interactions with students may/often include (but not be limited to) methods such as email, phone, video teleconference, Residential Conference meetings.

• Saybrook Adjunct Faculty are expected to respond to students by using their Saybrook email address (@saybrook.edu), Canvas inbox, or by phone within two (2) business days no matter where they are located.

• In addition to scheduled student appointments, Adjunct Faculty are expected to post and provide two (2) hours of drop-in office hours via Zoom a month. These time blocks should be no less than thirty (30) minutes each. Office hours can be offered during normal business hours.

• Following through on Student inquiries and requests as it relates to academic progress.

• Utilize University offered resources to maintain technology skills specific and appropriate to each program and process.

• Adjunct Faculty will return Student papers with feedback for assignments submitted through Canvas within the following guidelines (applicable to candidacy essays, MA theses/projects, and dissertations):

  • 1 week for work less than 5 pages in length

  • 2 weeks for work up to 25 pages in length

  • 3 weeks for work 26-50 pages in length

  • 4 weeks for work over 50 pages in length

• Course papers must be graded according to the course evaluation deadline in the academic calendar.

Position Requirements

• Enrolled in the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Ph.D. program

• Completion of at least 75% of Ph.D. coursework

• Seniority in the Integrative and Functional Nutrition program will be considered when selecting for the position

• Demonstrated scholarship and/or accomplishments the program

• Commitment to multicultural and humanistic principles.

• Collegial attitude and willingness to work within a matrix organization.

• Clear communication skills.

• Engage in ongoing technology education and adoption of new systems and processes.

Compensation & BenefitsThree credit courses are budgeted at $2,000-4,000 per course, dependent upon student enrollment. Two credit courses are budgeted at $1,334-2,668 per course, dependent upon student enrollment. Under-enrolled courses may fall below these ranges.
