The Tippie College of Business seeks candidates for an Academic Advisor in their Undergraduate Program Office. The position is responsible for advising undergraduate business students on issues including four-year degree planning, major selection, and academic and professional goals, in addition to participating in the administration of programs, policies, and procedures related the College and University. Responsibilities will require occasional time outside the 8:00 am to 5:00 pm workday to support student activities and events such as commencement.

This position is Hybrid with one work from home day allowed.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC JOB TASKS

Academic Planning

  • Provide holistic advising to both prospective and current undergraduate business students regarding their academic career and goals. Examples include course planning and registration, majors and degree requirements, opportunities for involvement, and policies and procedures.
  • Provide advice to incoming first-year students during summer orientation sessions.
  • Ability to make referrals to appropriate resources to support student success.
  • Maintain records of student advising meetings and monitor academic progress of students in an assigned advising caseload.
  • Teach students to utilize tools and resources (e.g., degree audits, major sheets, sample plans) available to help them design appropriate academic plans and track their academic requirements.

Student Growth, Development, and Success
  • Assist students in identifying their interests, abilities, and in making decisions about their academic and future professional career goals.
  • Assist students in their exploration of opportunities to enrich their academic experience and to meet the requirements of Tippie RISE- mentored research with faculty, an internship course, study abroad, and experiential learning. Make appropriate references to resources available for each area of RISE.
  • Teach sections of the Direct Admit Seminar in collaboration with student peer mentors. The Seminar is designed to facilitate a successful transition to the Tippie College for first-year students.

Advocacy from an Advising Perspective
  • Identify issues that may create barriers to student success and retention.
  • Support and advise students on academic probation and collaboratively create plan to return to good academic standing.
Student Recruitment and Retention for Tippie College Programs
  • Serve as Tippie Undergraduate Program Office liaison for an academic program within the Tippie College of Business.

Strategic Staffing and Professional Development
  • An additional programmatic support area will be identified within the first year of employment. Interest areas along with departmental needs will be considered when determining programming support area.
  • Engage in development opportunities provided by the Tippie College of Business including collegiate academic institutes, events, workshops, and course shadowing.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education Requirement
  • Bachelor's Degree expected by June 2023, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in direct student contact at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience fostering an equitable and inclusive environment for student success.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated constructive and collaborative relationship building skills with a variety of individuals and groups, including peers, leadership, and external constituents.

Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree.
