The Doctor of Chiropractic program prepares graduates for personal and professional fulfilment in a climate of giving, doing, loving and serving from a place of abundance.PURPOSEThe Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist is a central part of Life West's expanded efforts in implementing educational technology in the classroom, expanding online learning opportunities and enhancing student success programs. The position advises graduate students regarding Doctor of Chiropractic Program (DCP) requirements and course scheduling. This position is responsible for advising international students at Life West.The Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist reports to the Manager of the Academic Success Center. This position also works closely with the Life West Registrar, Financial Aid, and Admissions staff to assure that all students entering Life West are educated in accord with Life West's Core Values, that all student centered policies and procedures are carried out consistently and expediently and that our diverse student population is given equal access to a high quality education. Finally, this position is one that requires experience in student retention. Working together with the department manager and the Provost, a plan will be devised to improve student retention. RESPONSIBILITIESSpecific duties and responsibilities for the Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist include but are not limited to, those noted below:
  • Meet with individual students to assess and develop their educational and vocational goals.
  • Meet with and monitor the progress of individual international students; work with the international advisor in Admissions on graduation timelines for international students.
  • Oversee and lead registration for students identified on special schedules.
  • Track and meet with students quarterly who are identified as not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Coordinate the tutoring program, including hiring and supervising tutors in basic science courses.
  • Encourage students to utilize digital, tutoring and library resources.
  • Prepare supporting documents for student advising files.
  • Analyze and resolve student issues associated with program requirements, course scheduling and degree matriculation. Interpret and apply academic policies for student degree requirements and academic progress as needed.
  • Lead workshops regarding time-management, study skills, test-taking, etc. as needed.
  • Collaborate with campus staff to identify creative solutions to enhance the student's overall educational experience.
  • Pursue and demonstrate content knowledge regarding specific degree, credential and certificate programs.
  • Pursue and demonstrate content knowledge regarding current learning outcome model of academic advising as endorsed by the National Academic Advising Association.
  • Respond to complex inquiries by students and prospective students relating to program requirements, curriculum and course offering and Testing and Educational Services.
  • Familiarity with FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
  • Devise, refine and implement a student retention plan.
  • Track student retention results and modify the plan as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  7. Continuous Improvement: College employees are expected to give attention to continuous assessment and improvement of the position's assigned set of duties and responsibilities.
  8. This position requires experience in student retention and as such will employ this experience in retaining students both those that are communicating their intention to drop and those that are at risk.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology or related discipline required; Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology or related discipline preferred.
  • One (1) to three (3) years directly related experience, preferably in a higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising theories and principles.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to explain academic policies and procedures to diverse constituents, including students, faculty and staff.
  • General knowledge of enrollment management and retention best practices and the ability to apply them to an adult learning environment.
  • Working knowledge of federal regulations such as Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to student accommodation.
  • Strong analytical skills to gather data.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying academic policies for student degree requirements and academic progress.
  • Experience in resolving academic issues that also involve the vocational and life goals of the student.
  • Academic course work in the Basic Sciences or a Health Care Discipline preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse constituents and to provide high quality support and customer service to students.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to abide by the ethical standards and guidelines for academic advising.
  • Computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic mail and internet applications, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Technical skills to learn and use online tools and administrative software.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Provide professional services with integrity.
  • Provide professional services objectively.
  • Maintain the knowledge and skill necessary to provide professional services competently.
  • Be fair and reasonable in all professional relationships. Disclose conflicts of interest.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  1. Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.
  2. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
  3. Must be able to lift 25 lbs., retrieving and placing materials on high shelves and on floor-level shelves; standing, walking, carrying, grasping, hearing, seeing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and reaching.
