What Is the Importance of a Cover Letter?

What Is the Importance of a Cover Letter?
So you are getting ready to apply to your next job, and you are feeling excited. This job is a perfect match for you, and you are committed to getting the attention of the employer.

How can you set yourself apart and give yourself the best possible chance of getting the job? You have to write a cover letter.

We're here to talk all about the importance of a cover letter. Read on to learn more.

It Sets You Apart

You might be wondering why you'd want to write a cover letter for a job that doesn't require one. It's true that many employers choose to ignore cover letters, but this isn't the case for all of them, so you shouldn't make that assumption right away.

If an employer does, in fact, look at cover letters even if they don't request them, your cover letter will set you apart. Writing a cover letter shows that you're ambitious and willing to go above and beyond (which all employers want to see).

Let's say that an employer is looking at two great resumes, yours and another potential candidate's. If you're equal in all other ways, the fact that you wrote the best cover letter (or even the only one) might be what gets you the job!

It Shows Your Personality

Even the best resume won't allow you to show the employer who you really are. If an employer is trying to find someone who will fit into their company culture, they need to be able to get a better idea of your personality. Why not give them that opportunity before you even land an interview by including a cover letter with your application?

It Allows You to Show Off Communication Skills

Another one of the top benefits of a cover letter is that it proves that you have good written communication skills.

Communication is key in the vast majority of jobs. Whether you're working at a register or working on projects with other employees, you need to be able to communicate clearly.

Many employers use interviews to determine each candidate's communication skills, so your cover letter will put you ahead. If you write clearly and convey your thoughts in a brief letter (no more than four brief paragraphs), it means that you communicate well.

It Lets You Go More In-Depth

A resume doesn't give you enough room to go in-depth about all of your skills and strengths. In your cover letter, you can devote an entire paragraph to them.

Explain why you'll be a good asset to the company and what experience you have to back that up. Talk about what it is that made you choose this company above all others.

It might feel like a combination of bragging and flattery (and in a way, this is true), but it's exactly what you need to do if you want to land your dream job.

Don't Underestimate the Importance of a Cover Letter

Writing a cover letter might seem old-fashioned, but don't skip it! Many employers still recognize the importance of a cover letter and they'll appreciate that you went the extra mile.
